gday,so ive been chasing a top end/tappet noise for a couple of months now(4.2 tdi)since doing oil change,4 out of 5 days of the week i only do 6 km's to work and the same back home,is it right that diesels can build up crap around pistons, valves etc if they're not driven long enough??? maybe mine just needs a longer drive once in a while?? what does every one think?? thanks.

You could get a bit of carbon build up if she isnt worked real hard very often. 6k she would lucky to be warm

I noticed for a few days when it was real cold it took longer for a tappet noise in mine to go away i hadn't done much driving just to the shops and back.
Maybe a thinner oil in winter would help.
I am running dello 400 15w40 maybe something like a 10w40 would be better.

forgot to mention that ive done the tappets, set them at .012" rather that .014",thought that may have quietened it down a bit, didnt change.

Just take her for a nice long drive well at least 20k each way and give it a bit a go and see how she goes.

Mate, might pay to pull the rocker gear off and check for wear in the rocker arm where it touches the valves.
This can give you a false reading on the feeler gauge.
If you have the valve clearance too tight, even a few thou as you have said, you run the risk of burning valves, better to be loose than tight.
I would also check for leaky manifold gasket, these can sound like loose tappets too.

Doesn't appear to be any wear on rockers,we checked them with dial indicator,do you meen exhaust or intake gasket?

Yes, exhaust, but it may also be worn rocker on the shaft, bent pushrod, week rockershaft tension spring that lets the rocker have lateral movement and cause a clicking sound.
If you remove the valve cover and have a listen with some garden hose while motor is idling, you may be able to hear the noisy ones.

had a diesel fitter call past yesterday,he said its got a bit of injector noise, and possibly a bit of wear on the rocker shaft/rocker bore.put a bit of 2 stroke oil in fuel tonight to see if that will reduce some of the injector noise??

Mate, two stroke is not going to fix worn injectors. If the injectors are worn the motor will have a knock, the only way to solve this is to have your injectors serviced.
Two stroke only helps with lubrication and doesn't repair anything.
If the injectors are "dribbling" this will cause a light knocking sound, a simple service will solve this and give you peace of mind.
You are wasting fuel and clogging your exhaust system, low power and hi EGT's
Do the service and never look back.

so do you recomend servicing the old ones , installing exchange ones or get brand new ones??
the ferret

Mate, have yours serviced if possible, new is expensive, ring around a few places and get quotes, a good injection mob should be able to service your injectors or point you in the right direction.
When you look at it, plug replacement in a petrol engine is far more expensive over the years than injector service every 100 000 ks.
Dribbling injectors burn holes in pistons, upset the ECU and cause hi EGT. which lead to engine failure.
Spend the bucks now and avoid future dramas.
