View Full Version : Problem installing new audio unit: No sound!

Hi Folks.
I have bought a new car stero/GPS/DVD/ etc for my 2006 ST Wagon. And an interfacing connector for the Nissan audio harness.
Soldered the wires from the radio to the interface plug and connected to 4WD's audio harness. No sound - even when running a CD.
Problem is: there was no sound when I bought the vehicle (which I attributed to the dead stero). I do not know is the truck's wiring and speakers are servicable... Bad base from which to commence trouble shooting.
I used a circuit tester. All speaker wires out of the head unit have power: both + and -.
I have removed a speaker and tested it OK on my home audio system.
Have spliced that speaker into the wiring on the back of the GU's stero unit - left rear speaker. No sound.
Took the head unit to a car stero workshop - where it tested as fully functional.
Have disconnected all speakers and reconnected each - one only at a time. No sound.
Have now cut each of the stero's output wires (one by one) looking for a short. No sound.
Have reconnected all speakers and wires. No sound...
===
I have seen adverts for other new audio units with DVD - which require a wire from the stero to the vehicle's brake circuit (as sort of acceptance that watching a DVD whilst driving is dangerous). But the manual for this stero has no such specification - though there is a wire labled 'brake'.
===
Before I take the problem to professionals to rectify, any suggestions pls?
Thanks

The "brake" lead only stops the screen from activating when watching movies / dvd's etc. Put an "O" ring on it and can be earthed to almost any point in the area and the screen will work, does not have to be to brake lead.
1 thing I can think of is when you re-wired it up, there may be a mix up of wires to their respective spots. Safer to buy and Aerpro harness already done and plug it in, $25.00 saves a lot of messing around.
The only other option is completely rewire all speakers, earths etc with better cable.
Have had no issues at all with swapping over stereos in the troll, the wife's epica or any other unit using a plug n play harness. From start to finish in the troll should be no more than an hour to swap decks.
Also have you used an Aerial adapter lead to change from Nissan to aftermarket?

Hi Oncedisturbed. Thanks for your contribution.
This new unit was advertised as 'fitting a Patrol'; however, that must be a new Patrol as the supplied single plug in no way resembled the dual plugs in the Patrol.
I used an aerial adaptor to change the standard Nissan dual-plug aerial lead to the new radio's single plug lead ($10 off eBay).
I have used an aftermarket adapter (ISO) to connect the new audio unit's wires to the Patrol's standard harness. ($13 from Supercheap Autos) - with me selecting/joining/soldering all wires. So, I could have gotten something wrong - though the wire colours on the radio and the interface/adaptor matched exactly - bar for the 'Illumination' wire, which I was able to identify from function descriptions.
I have run out of ideas - hence this post before I take the vehicle to the pros.
Thanks a gain for your input.

Have you tried the/ a car speaker in the said stereo while its out of the car? So the speaker is not touching any part of the car. Same with the stereo. Plug it in to the car but don't mount it.
Tried another speaker too? Just trying to think of things here...
Double check and triple check your wiring. Take it all apart I reckon and start again, but this time only plug in one speaker and see what happens.

Nissan supply their own sound systems in their vehicles and have a standard wiring harness which dates back to their late 90s models. To put in another type of stereo requires you to buy TWO harnesses. One of these will into the back of your new unit. The other will run from the current wiring block that connects to your speakers etc. The two match up in the middle - no soldering required! They are available from Super Cheap auto etc.
however, that must be a new Patrol as the supplied single plug in no way resembled the dual plugs in the Patrol.
I suspect that this was your issue. From the sound of what you've done it's time for the pros.

There is some good advice above mate.
For your interest I as having trouble with my GUIV factory stereo as 3 out of the 4 speakers stopped working, occasionally one would sinc in but most of the time nothing. I pulled the head unit out thinking I had a plug issue? It turn out that 3 out of the 4 were blown! You can bench test your speakers with a 9 volt battery to see if they are ok but regardless they are not much chop.

Same here. 3 out of the 4 were cactus in mine too. I did read somewhere that the factory speakers are notorious for failing.

Same here. Turns out that at least 2 of my speakers were 'dead' when bench tested (which means that the speaker was removed from the door and directly wired to the back of the head unit).
So, I bought 2x new speakers from a car audio shop - opting to replace just the front door speakers.
[Even though I wired in the rear speakers, neither are working - so, 3-4 of the speakers could have been dead.]
For the weeks I spent chasing this problem, the problem would have been readily identified if I had had a 'known good' speaker - which I though I had as I tested a speaker on the home stero....
Thanks to all for your contributions. :)

[Next problem: the power aerial won't extend]

As previously mentioned, a correct aerpro harness should have a 2 to 1 harness ie 2 from OEM harness to 1 to new aftermarket stereo. Many of them, the wire colour does not always match the OEM wire colours. Supercrap tend to carry basic aerpro harnesses, you may find that you will to go to somewhere like strathfield or alberts or repuptable stereo installer.

I recently put an aftermarket multimedia unit into my 2005 GU IV, check my ride here (http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?360-Time-s-GU-IV-4.2TD).
The wiring adapters I bought from Repco were Double diverysity lead Aerpro AP 348A ($12.99) to convert the Nissan aerial lead to "normal" male aerial plug and an ISO adapter APP0120 ($14.99) for the wiring. As mentioned above, two of the OEM sockets plug into one Aerpro socket, the aerial adapter takes care of the double aerial set up on the Nissan. The only issue I had was the ignition + and the memory + (red and yellow wires on the Aerpro adapter) were a about t, they had bullet connectors that I swapped over and all is well.
The power aerial works fine with the above adapter.

yes same here... i searched the forum here about replacing the speaker wires, as i didn't expect the speakers to be dead...
anyhow i thought it would be a good idea to test them as I already had the trims off, and whaddaya know? 2.5 dead speakers. replaced em all and my new pioneer head unit sou8nds like a roller disco.
for the wiring i bought the aerpro nissan-iso harness, cut off the iso connectors and soldered the ends to the pioneer-supplied connector with the stereo. saved me sixteen bucks.

6" speakers, altho 6.5" will fit, just a little tight. You need the 4 hole jobbies, not the 3, otherwise you will be drilling.
