G'gay,
I have a bit of vibration when driving, and a big shudder when shutting down. I THINK my passenger side mount is gone.
I have put a block of wood between the jack and the sump and lifted the engine.
I got a small paint scraper about 2 centimetres in between the rubber and the top metal plate of the mount. Should it have gone all the way in?
I have tried running the engine, and letting the clutch out with the hand brake on. But could see nothing unusual. ( I was watching the engine, assistant let the clutch out) Not real high revs but.
What are your thoughts?

Maybe try leavering it with a pinch bar or similar and see how much movement there is

How high did you lift the engine with the jack- there should be little movement

Yeah, I lifted it quite high. Basically the engine stopped lifting, and I started to take the weight of the car.You reckon I should get minimal movement, I got a good inch. The mount didnt appear to seperate though.
I couldnt get a pinch barin enough to get enough leverage.
I get enough vibration to make my hands tingle/ numb, and I get a large shudder when I shut it off. Is there maybe something else it could be? Buggered if I know. I havent had any experience with engine mounts.
Thanks fellas,
Mark

It shouldn't separate any where near that far mate. Time for some new heavy duty engine mounts boss ... generally you'll notice a knock when you pull up also as the engine "moves" on the mount. Harder to notice a knock under acceleration as the engine noise, road bumps etc can tend to conceal it ... that said, if you are noticing it as you take off also, then time to get it looked at mate.

Alright, I had a very similar problem on my girlfriends celica. Now you have jacking the motor up, but I'd try jacking it up and turning the motor on.
Reason I suggest that, is on the Sillycar, we were getting a horrible vibration at all times, her dad and I load tested the mounts (friction point test) with no movement at all, we also tried jacking the motor up with no unusual movement. He suggested to turn it on while jacked up(something I wouldn't of thought of) as it is, the engine vibration was gone. Had it in a mechanic just 2 days ago, turns out the engine mount appears to be in perfect condition, but the damn thing has sagged. So we had to replace the top mount.
Quite possibly that could be your problem, a sagged mount, cosmetically, they can't be picked. But if you haven't tried the jack it and run it test, give it a shot.
