Goodaye could anyone tell me if there is any advantage running a 3" exhaust without a muffler fitted? It is a 4.2 diesel aftermarket turbo ute. Any replies appreciated.
cheers Honest

Hi Honest, the main reason and advantage is to expel the exhaust gases quicker from the engine, allowing more cooler air in and better breathing all round.

The turbo can kind of act as a muffler too on a straight through so the sound is not as loud as you would think.

Personally, I love the sound of a 3" straight through on a TD42. Mine is quiet when idle or cruising on road but when offroad and needing to give it some curry it sounds like a possessed demon!

You should hear mine AB it stops at the cab being a ute very nice sound :):). The only thing the muffler does mate is that muffles the sound so its not as loud they sound awesome without them and if its a good muffler should not affect hp at all.

Mine has straight through mufflers two of them.
I can't stand the constant drone of an exhaust when sitting on the freeway at speed.
The turbo whistle is bad enough lol

Ok now for me to upset EVERYONE. I have done a lot of invetigating, as I do. And, I have come to conclude, that although it is widely and commonly believed that 3" mandrel bend no muffler system is best. This has got a huge flaw.

Turbos DO NEED BACK PRESSURE! If you take away all that bck pressure, you are shortening the life of your turbo. Not today or tomorrow, but it has the potential to live a shorter life than if it was to operate normally.

Mandrel bent exhaust also have such a minimal difference up against a non-mandrel bent exhaust of the same size, that you would not notice it on a Motor that was not built for Super High Performance. Yes I am sayingif you actually put on a #'' system of each type on your vehicle, I find it really hard to believe you could feel any difference. Yes it does help a motor to get rid of exhaust gases quicker, but, you do need back pressure on all combustion engines.

Food for thought.

BTW, I have just purchased knew exhaust system on Finly, after gathering all the facts and listening to advice from all that I respect on here and in my life away from he forum. As those of you whom know me, you know I don't follow the mob! Far from it!
