Hi guys,

So... a week now into owning the patrol and loving it, although this afternoon when starting I noticed a large cloud of white smoke coming out of the exhaust when I started it. Like most internet self diagnosis I automatically assumed the worst (being a cracked head), im trying to find out what else it could be?

After starting the smoke disappeared within 2-3 seconds and on the drive home no other smoke trails came out of the exhaust, after my 5 minute commute home I left the rig for an hour or so and started it again (no smoke).

I havnt been using it as my primary car since I have owned it and every time I started it I noticed the strong exhaust fumes but as I said only for a 2-3 second burst then it is fine..... it's an 06 4.2 patrol with 170k and regular 5000k services.

Does anyone know what this could be? or have you experienced similar issues?

Could be a glow issue. White smoke is unburnt fuel but if its disappearing and only happening on initial cold start then it could be glow related. Try glowing it twice before starting and see if it still does it.

yer sounds like glow plugs, how long does it turn over for before it actually starts, should be between 2-3 seconds on a dead cold start, longer than that & it is not burning the fuel hence the fumy smell when it does start, replace the glow plugs, should sort the issue
