you must have had a front wheel cocked up yo loose traction
4x4s are only front wheel assisted in good going
you need to put a front locker in to turn all 4 at the same time

Most 4 wheel drives arent 4 wheel drive
Never have been and never will be
The power is usually delivered as youve discovered
You go for a lokka of sorts , wether LSD,air lokka ,whatever youll then have power to the front or rear 2 wheels, then do the same to the opposite diff and youll then have 4 wheel drive
There are some constant 4 wheel drives out there, 80 series cruisers, jeeps, some others

They must of dropped the quality of the diffs with age, my 88 is as good as locked in any situation with a bog standard LSD. Does your 2k4 wagon have a solid front end? If so the spartan locker from Locktup4x4.com.au might help you. It's the one I'm putting in the front of mine, It's a mechanical auto locker, that applies when slip is detected. Apart from that, check the condition of your rear diff, if you do have an LSD, the shims may be very worn. If it's an open differential, you'll need to go another form of locker - in that case I would go an Air locker, or E-locker.
Reasoning behind this being (in my case atleast) I run my patrol in 2wd at all times, and only ever go to 4wd when it's needed, in which case a locker would come in handy anyway, so there is no point for me to have another thing to switch on to get traction, also, at 500bucks each, it's a bargain. For the rear though, it is in constant use, so the ability to lock it on and off would be a definite advantage.
