I gotta ask this question to satisfy my curiosity.

How do you :driving2: around, knowing, that at any second of any minute of any hour of any day,
your lift kit might get you stopped and canaried?

How do you do it - coz I couldnt? lol

I was just reading the back of my rego papers and part of it states:

The owner warrants that the vehicle will not be:
driven in an unsafe or damaged condition.

Take care out there.

I guess that a depends on what unsafe is perceived to be. Is a car with a 6 inch lift that has an engineers cert any safer tha a car with a 3 inch without a cert...... I seriously doubt it.

And is yours any safer than min Rossco. You may not have a lift but it's still taller and heavier than mine..... Higher center a gravity..... Less stable through corners....... Little cheese cutters that are like ice skates in the rain

Food for thought

You could move to Tassie! Pretty casual here. I pulled up at the lights next to a police car the other day. He didn't even look twice at my custom snorkel, smashed indicators bent in alloy bar, 33s sticking out past the rubber flares, darker than legal tint, or the fact it was coated in mud virtually blocking out the number plate!! Lol.

I am with Beneboy here, My GQ sits in the back yard and i drive it from home to the bush and back, i dont do Bog holes (i grew out of them a long time ago)(got sick of emptying the wallet) and drive responsibly when in the suburbs. I run Mudflaps and generally avoid exposure for no reason. Its built for the bush.

The GUIV has a 3" lift running 35s and if not parked near another GU looks like it should have come from the factory like that (well it does to me but i may be used to looking at it) I have NEVER been pulled up in it for anything other than a random breath test. I drive it responsibly and have zero guilt that i might not be driving a safe car. It handles better than factory and stops on Bendix Extreme pad and i am happy with that. I allow space in front and dont tailgate and that will do me.

Not everyone in a lifted 4x4 is a Hoon, unfortunately there are enough of them that it gives us all a bad name.

Mines a daily driver. I can't afford to run two cars and my bike. So I won't go overboard with mods and make it look too obviously illegal. But You can't get offroad here without going through a bog hole. Mud is fun too! Maybe I need to grow up?

Thanks for the replies guys.

Jeezzzzzz, sounds like I might have pressed a few buttons. lol.

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity. Feel free to add to this. I'm not going to lock this thread. lol

You're probably right, Clunk. My truck is a pig in the cross wind. Like a tissue box being hit side on. lol

Mine's a DX. No airbags, no ABS or ESC, no dashboard dimmer switch, no carpet and no frills. It does have a heater and CD player. What more should a man want? PML

It doesn't rate on the ANCAP, or Used Cars Assessment Program scale, either.

Seriously, I must say that my truck came with nearly every mod that I wanted and is very OSH friendly, and I'm one happy chappy.

Take care out there.

Good point, why did I break the law when I had my 4inch suspension lift, 2inch body lift running 33 inch tyres.......ummmm cause the laws are not really enforced where I drive, and I could get away with it.

Was my 4b any less safe than the other 50 trillion old cars running around that should be defected but aren't......probable not.

Did I have any accidents because my 4b was lifted....NO.

Did anyone else have an accident because my 4b was lifted.......NO

Fair enough I was breaking the law and I did so at my own risk, but just because I don't have the spare cash 2 legally get it engineered still doesn't mean I am driving it in a unsafe or damaged condition either.

I could go on about this subject all night long but there is to many beers that need drinking and just not enough time 2 type

My question 2 you Rossco..............Are you 200% sure every single thing on your rig is 100% legal?

All good here Rossco, certainly no buttons pressed here mate, you'd have to press bloody hard and very long lol....... Still recon you should get that beast of yours lifted by a couple and get some 33s on... You'll love your DX all the more :D

I have a engineer certificate for my lift (can't get a mod plate for that in QLD), and with 5" under it, I've been pulled over 3 times in the last 6 months - questioned about my steering wheel, questioned about mudflaps, car crawled over to find other issues, but never, and I repeat NEVER, questioned about the lift ...

Lucky?? Maybe, but I think maybe (just maybe) I'm just on that limit when looked at that it doesn't look like a monster truck ... definitely been hassled on the 33's but with VSB15 happening, there is an unofficial 'leniency' on that currently - I see trucks driving around that reckon they have a 5" but it looks like I could drive mine under it - maybe type of setup? type of truck (utes always "look" higher when lifted)?

Add to that my truck has decent seats, is very tidy internally, well maintained generally (doesn't have rust, crap hanging off it, broken mirrors etc) and I think that also has a bearing on it - they see that sort of stuff and simply think they're on a winner and start picking the thing apart in an effort to get it off the road??

Dunno .. probably could've started with that word and left it at that I guess!! lmao

I'm with bigrig I have a 5" sus lift and 2" body lift I have also never been questioned or done on the sus lift but have been asked about the body lift and defect wise the only fine i have gotten is for 35's on the bitumen. If it looks neat is well mainatined and you drive sensibly then most of the time you will be over looked. Alls you need is a button to eject red p plates out the back onto the cars behind and the canaries wont know where to start lol

It took it as a calculated risk and was prepared for the trouble if it ever came. Never worried about it that much because until recent years most police didnt have 4wds on their radar.
I actually ran my GQ around for 9 years on a 4" lift and 35's and never had it defected :), but it was neater looking than a lot of other modified 4wds and never had the look at me roof lights, bonnet scoops, fat stainless snorkle etc that seem to be the cop bait these days.

Would I do it again, yep. If they are going to get all shirty about 2" lifts and 33's which would be my minimum modifications for any 4wd I own then I may as well go to the next step again.
But again it would be modified tastefully, kept clean and tidy and I would not attract attention with my driving style/speeding etc. And lastly keep my fingers crossed lol.

I wouldnt bother if I was on my P plates he he.

Vehicle Standards Bulletin 15

Currently in QLD State Parliament - I only found out through a cop, so not sure where to look for it, but he specifically mentioned a 50mm increase making 33's acceptable ..

It's federal guidelines, but not legislated, so states accept it or not as it were - hence the difference state to state.

They're in the process of changing the laws over here in NZ regarding lifts. New rules are max 100mm including tires if you are member of 4wd association .if not max 50mm .If you are a member and your 4wd is 100mm lifted and you sell it to a non 4wd member you must lower it to no more than 50mm. The 50mm is borderline, one outfit can say get a cert, another can ignore it so once again bureaucracy at it's best LOL. Doesn't really affect me as such as when I've finished my project will need it anyway but do feel for the guys that already have it.
