I am planning on doing the Simpson next June/July on with a loaded up GU 4.2TD wagon (approx 500kg including draws, fridge, roof rack etc) what fuel usage is typical for a GU? Will be crossing east to west.

Cheers,
Tim

Nissannewby, Is that sand ridge country only consumption? Those figures are very good if it is.
I was expexting up around 20l/100 at least.

Our '05 3.0ltr turbo common rail Hilux used 100litres in 548klm to cross the Simpson. That is 18.25l/100k.

Looking forward to seeing your fuel usage Muddy, help us plan for our desert trip next year.

Cheers Macca

I've done the Simpson twice in a GU IV 4.2tdi with all the goodies you mention, running 285X75X16 tyres (33"), see my ride here (http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?360-Time-s-GU-IV-4.2TD).

Fuel usage on last trip in 2009 from Oodnadatta to Birdsville was 21l/100 k. As a comparison Canberra to Cobar on the tar was 14l/100 k

Thanks I will budget for 21l/100km plus an extra 20 litres on top. I averaged around 19l/100km doing the CREB and OTL, and I get about 14l/100km on the blacktop.

Thanks TimE, was thinking that would be what consumption to expect.

My figures are just from towing a 2T+ horsefloat on the highway. Without andy load the best i have seen is about 10.5 to the 100. Sorry should have been more specific.
