Hello!

I have a Nissan Patrol pick up Y61 2002 with a TB45S which is a carburetor engine. I am looking to swap a TB48DE (4800VTC) complete with wiring, Ecu and manual gearbox?

Seems like most of you have the diesel engine in Australia but I will still ask... I have looked around a bit and got to know that there are two versions of the 4800 VTC one with 245 bhp and one with 280 bhp. Can some one tell me in which year was the power increased and how can one Identify the 245 bhp engine and the 280 bhp engine? Will the engine number give out the power figures? And will my existing gearbox bolt up directly onto a TB48DE? or does it have a different housing and bolt pattern?

Any help would be great!!

Cheers!

There are two models of TB48. There's a Type A and predictably a Type B with some minor layout changes in the Engine bay.
Other TB engines are identified with Type A having the engine No stamped on the block, and type B stamped on the head. However this doesn't apply for the TB48DE - they are all stamped on the head.
The most obvious identifier is the coolant expansion tank on the RHS of the engine for the type A. Type B shows a clutch reservoir so may be type B is for the manual transmissions.

According to the manual Type B has movable fittings for LHD or RHD. Type A is the same, so maybe its LHD only.

I'll take a look under my bonnet tomorrow and check what I've got in mine. I thought it was a Type A with the expansion tank - but it is a manual so who knows what's going on here

I heard that the difference in HP is just a marketing thing that they use in the Gulf States to make the car look better. There's no actual difference in the engines as far as I'm aware..
Having said that, there is a difference in the ECUs apparently. The best ECU to get is the one from 2003.

Thanks for the reply... So you say that type A and type B are not different specs wise... just superficially?

I see that you are from Dubai and thats where I'm going to get my engine from. Do you know any place that deals in these engines? I know SHJ is the engine market but someone was telling me that these engine are available in Dhaid and Musaffah area... do you know where these areas are? Like the exact location?

And please do check your car and let me know what year is it and other relevant details...

Hello Mate,

I looked in the front, and i'm not much wiser for it. I'm pretty sure that mine's a type A. Looking in the workshop manual - there is a cold weather model for Europe. Makes sense that this wouldn't have the additional coolant tank and that it would be available in Left/Right hand drive. Maybe that is the difference between A & B

My car is a 4.8 Safari spec. Built in October 2010 and received by me on 26 December - my best ever Christmas present :)

Not many places in Dubai for engines, but lot's in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. Sharjah and Abu Dhabi are both cities, but they are also the region/state or Emirate.

So Dhaid is the second city/town in Sharjah and Musaffah is on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi. I've been to Dhaid a few times, but never to Musaffah. You may want to check out some of the Middle-East off-road forums for some more info

Hey Bulbous...

Thanks mate thats a big help.... I know SHJ and AD.... I have spent alot of time in Dubai.. 1991-2007. And yes I can recall Dhaid now... I used to go for there for sand bashing there as a kid with my dad, it has some serious sand there... IIRC its on the way to Fujairah or may be RAK?

When you say that the increased power is a marketing gimmick... are you sure about that? And does that mean all TB48 are 280 bhp or 245 bhp? Cuz 245 s pretty low for a 4.8 modern engine.

Where are you from if you don't mind me asking?

Cheers!
