Lanolin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanolin)is a natural waxy substance derived from wool, helps to make water run off things. So is something you would coat vulnerable parts with BEFORE you go into water, salty or otherwise. Also a good lubricant for those who wear gumboots to meet their girlfriends;)
As above, wire brush, rust converter (phosphoric acid basically see here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphoric_acid#Rust_removal)for wiki entry) and suitable paint.
