I'm going to mount winch and wonder if main switch is necessary and what kind of switch should it be. Could you advice me sth?

Hey Bodek,

I highly recommend a main power isolation switch for the winch. You will basically be putting a switching circuit to the power to the Solenoid box, the Solenoid box controls the power to the winch so isolate that and the winch is dead.

The Solenoid is basically a big relay and on the switch side is a low current circuit. You may consider putting a small relay into the switching circuit but all in all its a simple job.

Hope that helps.

If I proper understand, you mean isolation switch on this fat red wire (+) between accu and solenoid box. How many [A] ampers should the switch be. The winch is 12000 lbs, engine 6.6HP, recomended accu starting circuit 650ACC.

No no not quite. The Solenoid is a big switch. It is a big on/off switch that is switched from the controller. Without the controller the solenoid won't work and the winch won't work.

So the wire that you need to put the isolating switch into the supply to the hand controller plug in the solenoid box. If you turn that off then the solenoid will never power up and you have an isolating circuit.

Hope that helps

I put a main starting isolator and put it inline on the main battery positive between battery and winch i did think about doing as suggested above but decided that if their is a problem eg solenoid welds
on a single direction witch i have seen a couple of times, i can turn it off at the main switch to pervent damage this is also good if the main wire shorts and starts to burn it can be just turned off, i always leave it off unless i need it.

OK, thanks. I have to watch the equipment again and will ask you again if in doubts.

As shown above instruction suggest switch on main + wire. But still is the question; what kind of switch?

This kind of switch, its a bigger version of relay with higher amp rating..

This type to be exact...

this is what im planning on using for mine. Ebay battery isolator (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/290696548979?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649)

Yes you can do that but not really needed
