what does it mean if the gear stick lifts out of the top of the gear box could it be expensive ?

It means your missing the bolts that hold the cover plate of the bushes that hold the stick it. take the boot off and take a look, its the only thing that holds the stick in so it can't be anything else.

It means the circlip holding the shifter in the selector housing is probably broken. The shifter boot and trans tunnel cover has to come out then you have access to the selector housing.

whoops yes your correct, forgot those boxes use a circlip not a plate with bolts, i should of remembered that seeing as i did the bushes only a couple of months ago.
