hey guys i was out doing s bit of sand work in the patrol yesterday when i noticed under load she was starting to get hot. as soon as i started driving back down the gravel track it cooled back down. i grabbed the fan while on idle and it stopped indicating the viscus hub is stuffed. i have heard you can service them by refilling them with silicon oil from toyota. is this true and if it is how easily is it done

Check the fan when cold, it should be firm or stiff when you try to spin it. Check someones elses fan as comparison. Get some fluid from Toyota, maybe 2 tubes, open the hub and pour it in. It's pretty thick like honey, but don't put in too much as the fan will be on all the time. You should hear it spinning when you start the car in the morning then itll cut out.
Also these engines do overheat when climbing hills, so also check your cooling system.

Been a while since I did one, but remove the fan blades and there will be a few nuts to undo on the hub to split it open. You will see a groove where the fluid goes into.
This will give you some help http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3ACx7GTCn7Y
Little different setup on the internals but same principal.
Perhaps someone can chime in and confirm the internal of the Gq.

I suppose it would depend on how empty it is now. I'd start with one tube put it back together and check the fan on movement. If you put too much in then the clutch won't work and the fan will be on all the time. Good thing is it doesn't take long to pull apart and put back together.

best way to check it? as now while it is on idle i can stop fan with hand but i dont really wanna try it when i have done the viscus

I use a thick leather welding glove.
I am still confused as to how they work though i played with the spring on the front of mine and anti clockwise opens the valve sooner but it made it worse.
Turning the spring clockwise i can hold the fan for a while then feel it start grabbing and when i let go it roars and draws air through like when you first start it up.
I don't get it.
I think it might be designed in a manner where the the hot air from the radiator passing through when moving on the spring opens the valve up making it spin free and when their is no hot air on the spring it cools making it lock up or grab drawing the air through faster.
Wich is the opposite of what i have read.

TD or TB?.
As TB hub looks unserviceable.
Are the hubs interchangeable?, Heard they are!.
Is this true or something else involved?.

ok cool i always thought the fan would grab and lock when it is hot not when cold as i thought thats when thje most air is needed

Yeah that's what i read but it isn't the case and i guess it makes sense when sitting at a stand still idle no air is passing toward the spring it cools and then the fan works harder.
When your driving and the hot air is forced into the spring so clutch releases somewhat and relies on the friction of the the silicon oil to spin the fan.
When the silicon oil goes off it is like glue and makes the hub lock up more restricting the air flow at higher speeds.
This is the only conclusion that works for me lol

I remember someone telling me they use heat soak from pump side to operate

I'm still getting over that line at start of Thread " i grabbed the fan while on idle" , I wonder how many fingers get lost doing this , is just me , but if you think it's broken, just replace it and no fingers lost thanks Guys cheers

At over $500 from nissan for a genuine one don't you think just replacing it would be a pretty silly move if it isn't the problem or $20 worth of silicon oil fixes it.

Apparently aftermarket ones are no good.
But you would have to be a deadset incompetent fool to lose a finger stopping a clutch fan but hey i guess they are out there and anything is possible otherwise their wouldn't be tv shows like world's dumbest driver criminal etc .

haha there is a safeish way to stop the clutch fan on idle you dont need to give it much pressure to stop it if its rooted
