Saw a bit of this show yesterday arvo, bit of a home grown car enthusiasts show.
They were at the Ballarat swap meet with their cameras and showed some interesting finds for the restorers and rodders.
During the show they had a tech spot, this dude was fitting a supercharger to a Nissan 4.2 deisel.
He removes the turbo of course and reuses the intercooler? or fits some other IC?
Its a bit this week and some more next we have to wait for the next installment.
He runs the charger off a serious step up in the revs, 200 odd mm to 80 odd mm thats 1:2.5.
15 psi boost from the get go is his calculations.
This gives good torque from a stated 1000rpm.
Ideal for towing a boat were his comments, I'm thinking ideal for the bush.
He said that all the bits are Aussie made as well, here is their web site without this story unfortunately.

Next week they are doing dyno sheets after its all finished... be interesting....
No idea of costs or what else has to be done to the engine to make it all work.

Cheers Macca

Be interesting i was under the impression a supercharger takes a fair bit of hp to make hp.
And that they wear out pretty quickly.

97 a 1:2.5 rev stepup would have to use alot of energy, the benifit would be low rev boost from what I understand.
Mine is shocking under about 1800rpm, 3.0L in my common rail work vans have heaps of torque from low revs, be nice to have that in the ute.
I know my old tech engine is simple will last for ages so there is a benifit there.

Fast way to get rid of $5000???? maybe more. Our local 4x4 mob charges about $3500 for a turbo uprade so this has to be even twice as much...

As its been said they need power to make power but his torque numbers will be through the roof. Most high quality chargers these days shouldnt really wear the parts dont actually each other as with turbos it will just be prolonged periods of hard use that will see them distort fins etc.

Recorded Sundays show and watched it again.
Sounds like an interesting project.
All the brackets are made from ally plate so have a backyard look compared to something that was cast or billet, but look very strong though.
Noticed the engine has a set of extractors, got me thinking a Turbo would drain power and a massive obstruction in the exhaust side as well.
Stump pulling power at low revs sounds real nice to me.
Wait till we see the numbers I guess.

Turbos dont rquire any power to make power its not the flow of exhaust gas that gets a turbo to do its job but thats for another thread:). Theres not a lot of restriction thorugh a turbo.

A blower might rob some power to make power but it's making heaps more than enough power to supply the power it robs. 15 psi boost from almost idle will pull some stumps

Mate feel free to post away, I for one am interested in this stuff and would enjoy learning more from blokes with your knowledge and skills.

Super chargers rob very little power like an aircon compressor but you get full boost almost instantly where as a turbo needs to spool up to make boost. boost = power and torque.

Back in my commodore days I saw a couple doing the rounds using an M 90 eaton positive displacement charger ( makes boost at idle) capable of about 7 to 10 psi of boost but also in the mix was a rather large turbo that didn't spool till 4000 rpm so you got low down torque and power to get the hole shot from the charger and top end power when the turbo kicked in. Between the two it was running 20 to 25 psi in an LS2 V8 made about 700kw at the wheels. Very nice/ costly set up but great for light racers and high way speeds

Can also get prochargers that are cheaper and easier to fit. And even electric chargers that don't take away any torque at all as they don't run off engine pulley but electricity

Has anyone ever tried the little toyota superchargers. sc14 or sumfin. Admittedly they dont make huge boost but cost next to nothing and can run up to 10psi i think which isnt huge but would make a difference and there relatively small as well.

I had a mate years ago who fitted a sc16 (the big brother to a sc14) which came off a 6cyl 2l Toyota to his shorty GQ. It copped a flogging over the years and lasted. 12psi at idle and it was very impressive.
