hey guys im new here and im looking to buy my first 4x4 after selling my car just last week. So i went to look at 2 ford mavs today a 1993 diesel with 220,000 on it and was a little rough and looked like it wasnt shy to dirt roads and 4x4 but still pretty good but it didn't have much of a service history, the other was a 1990 petrol with 143,000 and was in better condition then most new cars today and dont think it has ever seen or been near a dirt road in its life. so my question is this which would be better of? what sort of problems am i going to encounter later on? i plan to do some tour and some 4x4 and they are both around the same price any help or info would be much appreciated

Thanks Alex

Have a peek at the first sticky thread in general mechanical - will give you tips on what to look out for.

I have a petrol mav and they lurve to drink. So if long range is important to you, consider the diesel? By this I mean if you are going to do some serious desert trips etc, the (a lot?) less than 400ks you'll get from a Petrol Mav will be an issue.

If its just a short range toy, then I'd go the petrol if it was otherwise sound

Beware of cooling/head/head gasket problems with the petrol as well.

Probably fantasy land, but get the diesel reco'd and turbo'd, put it in the petrol body, sell the petrol engine to someone who has the above cooling problem, and wreck out the rough body from the diesel :-)

just to be different ill go petrol /gas see if you can get both tanks upgraded to larger size and carry spare jerry cans of petrol plan your trips you should be ok , one thing you will never have to worry about with the older models is the electronics when they go wrong they go wrong youre stuck your older patrol just needs a mechanic a newer patrol needs specialist workshops with diagnostic equipment worth thousands and thousands aint gunna find em back of burke but im sure you will find a mechanic to get an earlier one going thats if you cant nut it out yourself.with help from a manual. modern cars modern problems , i have a car that if ignition coil goes it has to be towed to the workshop and put on a hoist or over the pits and takes two to replace it same with spark plug leads and dizzy cap cannot do any of these at home unless you have a hoist or a pit , your interior light blows its part of the alarm system so you cant starat the car nothing works no electrics so you wouldnt know it was the blown globe unless you had come across it before yep love the luxury and modern appointments but not the threat of getting stuck in the middle of nowhere because a 20 cent light globe blew. keep radiator inhibitor up to your radiator and the corrosion proof one change it at least once a year or ealier if it changes colour , keep the oil changes up the radiator fins clear the engine clean and your eye on the temp gauge any change find out why there is always a cause for a blown head /gasket from experience i can say that .
