Ok to feed my patrol addiction i bought another one.
Previous owner said it had been overheated and was partially dismantled.
I put it back together enough to fire it up it's all fumy fuel leaking out of a broken return line from the injectors.
If i pump the fuel primer it runs a bit smoother.
But still it is not running on all cylinders.
The oil had been drained so i am not sure if it had water in the oil no evidence of it on the cap.

Cant see any signs on the radiatior cap either.
Not sure if i should go further replace the line and test run it.
I don't want to do the head then find it has bottom end issues.
And is their anything to look for on the td42 whilst the head is off.
It is a bit of a sludge pit looking at it with the rocker cover off .

Sounds like a blown head gasket, if it's been overheated it will surely blow the head gasket, this may have been why it overheated in the first place.
You could do a compression test, that should tell you why it's missing.
I would drop the sump and check the mains and big ends or at least do an oil pressure test.
I don't think it's the return line causing the miss.

Ok so the td42 isn't prone to head or bore cracking ?
Heres hoping it is as simple as the gasket blown between cylinders or a water jacket :harhar:
Done a few tb42's in the past they were just gaskets.

Don't be too optimistic, any head / block will crack if it's well cooked lol, you will need to check the bores anyway for scoring.
I would take the head off, have it crack tested if the bores are ok and go from there.

Yeah thinking if i rebuild it atleast i know what i have might even fit this engine in my wagon once rebuilt.
I have seen rebuild kits on ebay for $1300 I usually pay about $330 for a full head service then all the little things injector reco water pump etc it can wait until i have some money lol
