Hi all need help if anyone can give advice would be greatly appreciated
Have 2005 4.2td. Have just driven from Gosford to coonabarabean with no problems. Went to move the car after unpacking it and it was stuck in 5th gear

Have accessed the top of the gearbox and managed to remove the gearbox stick and the housing under it. On the right is a plunger that I pushed and managed to get reverse.
Is there any tricks to try and realign or is it a gearbox out of the car job

I am nowhere near Internet access so have had to ride a bike like 10kma to get access on phone. Will look back late tonight for replies

Hope someone can help

Cheers

I tried to copy this message onto this forum last week when I was in trouble. I ended up fixing it myself with the help of the local garage in Binnnaway (thanks heaps John at Meyers Motors Binnaway). Where else would they let you take over their workshop, their tools, and help you than in the Aussie bush.

Anyway the people that I spoke to said that the box would have to come out to fix the problem we had. We managed to do it with the box in the car - we removed the rear driveshaft and took off the 11 bolts that hold the gearbox crossmember on. By lowering the gearbox back as far as we could we could remove all of the bolts that hold the selector plate in the top of the gearbox.

We made sure all the gears were in neutral and realigned the selectors so they too were in neutral (this took a couple of attempts). We then carefully installed the selector plate back onto the top of the gearbox installed a couple of bolts to check and voila I had gears again

i still wouldn't be happy about leaving it now, it sounds like you have faulty detents and interlocks, if i was you id take it to a good gearbox shop and tell them what happened. could be as simple as just needs a new spring in them.
