G'Day Dan and Tam,
My GQ had auto locking hubs and not long after we got it we did a bit of off road work and would notice the clattering sound coming from the front diff due to the auto locking not engaging properly. So each time we would have to get out and switch them to the lock position and then select 4x4 that way wouldn't get the clattering. Every now and then when it was in 2WD it would start clattering so we would have to jam in 4WD and pull it out to stop it from clattering. We got sick of it pretty quickly and ended up fitting at set of manual hubs for under $200 and a couple of hours work they were worth. When I pulled the auto locking hubs off 1 was shot and the other was not evening working. Your best bet is to fit the manual hubs. Cheers, Matt

Maybe a silly question but is it in 2wd?
Also,
I've heard that with auto locking hubs, when you disengage 4wd you should reverse for 10 metres or so tomake sure the hubs disengage.

tappn it

99% of people who sell a 4WD with FWH's locked do so because the FWH's are stuffed.

Very suss so at the least I would pull 'em apart and inspect and if they look OK give them a service and grease. Do not over lubricate tho. Common trap and affects their operation.

It will spin even if hubs arent locked however you should be able to stop it. Jack up the front axle throw some stands under it hold the drive shaft and spin the front wheels if you cant stop it then they are still locked. If you call all sweet. Obvioulsy with the vehicle not running.

The old MK had auto hubs to and yes you had to reverse to unlock them also.
they would "click" to unlock.
I believe lack of use and maintance they tend to play up.

Just thought of something. should have thought about it sooner. With the vehicle parked in 2wd you should be able to turn the shaft freely without a drama in both directions if the hubs are uhnlocked.
