Hello,
I'm Des. At the risk of getting shot down first thing (understandably, I might add), I've got to say up front that I love the 80-Series 'Cruiser. I'm not saying "it's the best", I'm saying it's my favourite 4x4 and I have a large soft spot for it. That said, what I _really_ love is getting outdoors and exploring, whether that be in a vehicle or on foot or something else.

I'm here primarily because I want to learn. I am at the moment, sadly, without a true offroad vehicle, but I aim to fix that in the future. That means learning. While I have a soft spot for the 80, I'm not sure it's the best choice for what I want from a vehicle. The Patrol is an obvious alternative and I figure the best way to find out what's what is to get amongst those that know it best: owners and users. So here I am.

Special thanks to the creators, administrators and contributors to this forum for providing a place for such sharing to take place.

Regards,
Des

Patrol offers stronger CV's, differentials, gearbox, locking hubs amongst other things.

Thanks for the info.
What's the deal with the hubs on the Patrol (GU's in particular)? My experience comes from my second-gen 4Runner (basically a wagon version of a Hilux), which had the very simple manual-locking front hub setup and so no centre diff. I had thought that the Patrol (up until very recently perhaps) had manual locking hubs and no centre-diff, but was just reading in another post here about "auto hubs". Now I'm quite confused.
I must say I quite liked the idea of full-time 4WD (on the 'Cruiser) in terms of on-road safety, but on the flip-side I like the simplicity (and potentially better reliability in terms of "less things to go wrong") of part-time 4WD (and no centre diff). Thoughts?

Welcome to the forum Des.
Manual hubs were standard in the basic models, DX (GQ and GU), RX (GQ) and some early ST's I think (GQ only). The higher models got auto hubs with a manual over ride.
