hey this is my 98 GU patrol, right now its got a dead 2.8ltr turbo diesel.
After pricing up a 4.2 turbo engine conversion i through it might be more fun and for around the same price to do some thing else. im just about to start an engine conversion of VE ss L98 6ltr v8 and 6 speed auto in to the old patrol

got transfer case adaptor and got that transfer case out
The input seal cover plate will need to be changed to a 4.2 cover or chopped as the adaptor hits the lip coming off it under the seal
Also got the new sump kit the other day should clear the front axle no problems

Everything looks a tight fit, or not a whole lot of room for other bits, the rear shaft is going to be short!!
Sounds like you have it sorted though.

Great stuff! The 6 speed auto should be good, short 1st gear for crawling & 6th with the right diff gears will be perfect for highway.
We've got a V8 H3 Hummer here at work which has a clutch fan so there will be parts out there if you decide to go that way.

4th April 2012, 12:36 PM
cheers guys yeah been keeping me busy this one
as for the LS fan hub from a vortec engine that they run on chevy utes and gmc utes and the hummer you told me about
this would be perfect but the pulley system runs to far forward i would need to move all the belt driven accessory's forward and change the intake to the higher truck based version
that i still may do but it might cost to much when i can just run the stock ve ss radiator and fan set up with a new air con condenser for $660
but yeah still not sure on which way i wanna go yet
Parra
4th April 2012, 04:18 PM
good stuff mate!
glad its you doing that and not me. Id be up a certain brown and lumpy creek pretty darn quick.
I hope you have a blast in this thing when shes all back together.
julian14588
5th April 2012, 02:03 AM
i might just run the commodore radiator and fans for now as i can get a new genuine radiator, air con condenser and fans with shrouding for $660
just a bit worried it might not like being loaded up in the soft sand on a 40'c day
only really one way to find out

julian14588
5th April 2012, 11:49 PM
yess i cant wait till its done just want to get out bush and drive
after doing some more research and brain picking i think i will get a heavy duty ally patrol rad and make my own shrouding thermo fans set up which then can all be controlled by the engines ecu and a over ride switch on the dash

bit of a update guy .... spent my money for the car on some well needed holidays . but i did manage to get my headers done took about 50 hours of trial and error.
i may just need to fit a a whiteline sway bar on the front to give some more room on the exhaust (any one got a whiteline sway bar they could show me?)
STARTED OFF AS THIS

Following this thread with alot of interest mate coz i want to install a 5.7 in my gu. Just a quick question, what type of headers are they and what car are they supposed to fit into?? Coz there are genie extractors that are made for this install and the marks adaptors ones aswell.
Trifer
23rd November 2012, 05:37 PM
personally, I'd go the original patrol radiator. But, block off the outlets on each one, fill with water through the neck and see which holds the greater amount of water. That's ur best option.
Good luck. Hope all goes well :-)
julian14588
23rd November 2012, 11:01 PM
they started off there life as genie extractors, the gq conversion set meant for a ls1 5.7 with nissan manual
5.7 conversion would be a lot easier with getting the belt driven stuff shorted out, you can pretty much buy every thing you need for that conversion off ebay and marks, most of my conversion has been custom brackets and having to mod everything

Hey Mate, Great Build. What brand is the new sump?
Cheers
julian14588
2nd December 2012, 08:18 PM
it is a genuine GM kit with pick up dip stick and all
it is called a F body sump / oil pan
the sump i first brought was also a genuine GM sump advertised to suit this conversion
so called truck sump i think they use them in the hummer H3 but Far FAR to deep the f body sump is about 50mm / 2 inches less and will clear every thing if i sum how bottom out on my bump stops
GM sell a massive a mount of different bracket and sump ect ect to suit the ls engine all u have to do is look it up
as well as that it is one of the most common engine that are used in engine conversions so there is pleanty of after markey stuff as well
but with most conversions there is always customs/modified parts to be made

finished just needs a tune, engineering and over the pits
the exhaust goes in to a single 3 inch with a standard ve ss cat with a muffler and resonator it is not to loud bit of a v8 rumble but i still wanted it more quiet not to sure what eles i could do to kill some of the droning when doing 100km, i have also put in some 10mm sound heat shield and striped and scrubbed down the inside it was gross

well after a long time of playing around with the 6L80 transmission TCM and ECM tune i may have finally got it working correctly, i will be testing it this week so fingers crossed
also took it for its first big trip the other weekend and apart from the tune at the time she goes grate i end up using around 16LTR per 100KM highway driving (around town its a lot more prob just over 20LTR per 100KM) and off road on the rocks and beach and soft sandy tracks it went really well surprisingly that auto behind it really makes a huge difference especially in the soft stuff

Sounds great mate. Start your own thread. Look forward to watching your Project. Heaps of pics! We like pics. Use the Tappatalk App for pics from your phone it's heaps easier.
