hey guys i have a GQ td42 non turbo patrol. when i bought it the bloke said it overheats after about a 8 hour drive. i have not taken it offroad yet as this problem may cause problems off road. what could it be im gonna change the thermostat and flush the radiator. could it be the fan clutch or water pump. im unsure. what would you guys think it is

Seems bizarre to have a time frame attached to when it overheats boss?? Up hills, under load, etc I could understand, but 'after 8 hours'???

Yep, go the cooling system flushed and radiator also mate ... then take it for a blot and see what comes ... Hopefully it'll be cool and calm!!

I was in a rush for the last trip to Woodspoint and bought a Repco thermostat. Huge mistake!

They open up at about 80 degrees and pulling the camper up long hills I nearly cooked my engine and I also think it sometimes didn't open up.

Just bought a genuine one 3 days ago and took it up some serious long hills for a test and it didn't get past half way compared to 3/4 and above with the Repco one.

Genuine open up at 76.5 so check your thermostat as well mate and see what number it has on it.

is the water pump on a td42 belt driven?
Overheating only after a long drive, i'm thinking the usual symptoms ( rad cap, dirty radiator etc ), would cause you to overheat a lot earlier than 8 hours??

gidday , check what type of fan is fitted , 7 blades are more efficent ( off petrol model Patrol, so I was told by auto one dealer...!) check to see if shroud will allow 7 blade fan will fit as they are bigger in diammeter, my TD 4.2 ran hotter with the 8 blade fan towing 2.5 ton , also had to remove radiator to fit as not enough clearance between radiator and fan clutch, cheers Bazz Onslow WA

The myth of a time frame cooloing system is that a myth
If the cooling system is only good for 8 hours highway, shed last 10 mins in peak hour traffic

Thats why muppets work in the auto industry, they dont know any thing
The bolt centres for a diesel fan and a petrol fan are different and dont swap over
If the factory fan isnt able to do what it was intended to do when new and able to tow what the factory recommends id be ashamed to sell the car in the first place
After years of mechanical neglect and the cars age , id be checking a few things before just replacing a fan blade

OP
Take your radiator out get it rodded out , about $100, you do the removal and refit, generally the rads are blocked
