Same as if it's fitted to the vehicle.
- to the housing/body.
+ to the main positive terminal on the solenoid.
You will also need to supply a + to the smaller terminal on the solenoid.
Or you could take it to your local Auto Electrician to test.

Couple of hits to the starter and the missus cranking and boom she started. Changing it on the weekend. Do they have a gasket or can I use hi temp silastic

Not a bad idea to apply a thin layer of sealant around the seat, but mine(GQ RB30) fitted as it is. But, I reckon if you go mud off roading, then a tiny bit of sealant seal probably not a bad idea.
