THIS IS NOT A DIRECT BOLT UP!

The GQ tow bar bolts to the side of the chassis rail with 2 bolts. The GU tow bar bolts up under the chassis with 3 bolts..... I can make that work!!

I used so angle I had to weld nuts to to use inside the chassis rails.

First I drilled the holes in the angle and bolted it to the tow bar then welded the nuts in place.

Then I did some panel beating to my long range tank that has taken some BIG Hits!! Nothing a sledge hammer couldn't sort out.

    Panel beating done.

[QUOTE=MudRunnerTD;674199]So I had to drill 14mm holed up into the bottom of the chassis to mount the GU tow bar. I'm pretty stoked with how it's come up.

I wire brushed and painted the towbar before mounting it.

Today I cut off the factory tie down points off the back as they are in the way and not required.

Then I made a start on my new rear bar. I bought some 100mm wide flat plate 16mm thick to use as the mounting plates and will incorporate a recovery point at each chassis rail too.

In between it Pissing down rain today I got a little bit done.

I will make the middle of my new bar the same as my old one with C channel as I like the look.

    The mounting plates.

Marked out and centre punched ready to be drilled in steps.

Now the 25mm recovery hole suitable for a shackle. The plate is 16mm thick and I left 25mm of meat in front of the hole. I consulted 3dogs about this and he reckoned that would be fine.

Using a 100mm cutoff wheel I marked where I will grind to later.

I bought this drill bit set off eBay years ago! Bloody handy bit of kit!!!

Did I mention it pissed down most of the day!!

    Damn I need a Shed!!!

Mounted up the mounts to the GQ Factory towbar mounting holes.

    I'll grind the radius later.

Cut and test fitted the C channel

Measured, marked and drilled the holes for the 4 mounting points across the back where I have previously welded nuts on for my last bar.

I have also decided I will cut the end of the towbar off behind the pin hole and per mantle mount a new hook into the tow bar tube with new longer bolts through from the top like the removable one but permanent.

    Getting there.

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.
WARNING: Towballs used for recoveries can, and do kill people and damage property.

@MB here are a couple on the car mate. You could do similar but weld onto the top edge for sure mate 100% doable.

Mark, have a look at this design. This is what I believe addresses the forces and their directions - Vectors they are called. Its a serious structure, however it will do the job, and is what i would build myself. The integrity of the towbar is maintained and in fact is increased as it is now hard locked into the upper chassis member.winch plate full.JPGwinch plate detail 1.JPGWinch plate detail 2.JPG

You can fabricate this quite easily, tack it up, check fit, adjust then weld it out.

Just in the shed trying to visualise it thanks mates, got me thinking again, is there any structural drawbacks on the OEM chassis back down the line?
An element of chassis rail flexyness is possibly OEM designed in and hoping this wouldn’t lock them together too much?
Only reason I mention is that I met a bloke before lockdown readying his ISUZU twuck for around Australia and he choose a full floating type tray <> chassis mount system to retain some flex he was trying to engineer in.
    Cheers!

Its already restrained and you wont affect anything, stop over thinking it! Build it, bolt it in, get out and start using it - when you are allowed by Kevvy.
