    1998 2.8 Power Steering Belt

I was trying to change the power steering belt in my 1998 2.8 today. All the books say it is a 13A0775. (It currently has a 11A0750 which was fitted after it broke up at Rainbow Beach) .

So I bought a 775mm Dayco belt went to put it in and it is too long. I ran out of adjustment. It is close but it is still loose when the adjuster is fully out.

Not overly supprised as I have found the books are wrong for the belts for both the alternator and A/C.

So went down to Repco to get a shorter one. The next size down anyone makes is a 13A0760. Bought a 760mm Gates belt went back to the patrol, but now it is too short. No way you could get it on. Removed the adjuster bracket to see if I could increase the adjustment or put on the shorter belt and then the bracket. Both were a no go.

Then noticed the Gates belt is a fair bit thicker on the taper of the belt and sat a bit higher in the pulley. So i thought maybe a 13A0775 Gates would do the trick as the power steering has no idler and almost 180 deg of wrap (very unusual) around both pulleys and the higher sitting belt would get me over the line.

So back Repco....... Anyway to make a long story short it was still too long.

Anyway to get to the point, the 775mm belt is too long, the 760mm belt is too short and no manufacturer seems to make one inbetween.

I am surely not alone here?? Am I?

    What is everyone else doing?

It looks like I might have to modify the adjuster bracket which seems crazy. (or ring Nissan)

    thanks

or if you have a 2.8, if you could look under the bonnet and see what belt is actually fitted it would be appreciated.

    thanks

If you bought a 11A0775 then yes it will be too long. You need a 13A0775. If you didn't know that, that is...

Thanks for the replies. (I was trying a 13A0775.)

Anyway I went to Nissan, and the mystery was solved. The genuine Nissan belt (which Nissan don't provide a length, just a Nissan part number) is just a bit shorter than the 13A0775. I will fit today and report back, but I am thinking that you have to use the genuine belt for the P/S.

I guess when Gates , Bosch etc figure out what goes where in different vehicles, they just nominate the closest size, which is OK on the longer belts, but on the shorter ones there are just less sizes so they get it wrong occasionally.
