I was told that maybe I could try to flush the crap out with atf. And see if it will still drive and if it doesn't just to leave it be.
    Any thoughts

I'm going to try and flush out the water tonight with new tranny fluid and trans flush.
Then fill up again and cross my fingers

I drowned a MB Gaelenaden wagen over the roof many years ago. The auto filled with water as did the rest of the vehicle. i managed to winch it out of the hole using a warn low mount and after a lot of effort, drove it home. I took it down to a local automatic specialist and had them do exactly as you are suggesting. The auto trans fluid was the colour of pink ice cream. The auto had just started to slip at this stage.
Anyway, after a $400 bill from memory, the new fluid went in and no difference. the water reacted with the organic friction linings and it was a total rebuild - took it to MB and they refused to rebuild - only factory new. I went to an aftermarket reputable automatic reconditioner and it was never the same - vacuum advance on the auto just would not work, all new 'everything' - cost close to 10K. Lesson for me apart from being a dick and not testing the depth of the water crossing, was to not try and reco a transmission. I am sure many 'brown dog' transmissions have been overhauled with success, however i wonder about the finesse of the finished product. Mine was never the same and a disappointment, so I guess, just be aware you might be heading down a path or disappointment. The insurance wrote the vehicle off, which turned out to be a godsend as the dealers were out to extract every cent from a service - like driving down the road and throwing 'hundreds out the window'. So happy I bought the patrol after that.

I have some good news. I filled the car up with trans fluid and liqumoly auto trans flush. And I was shifting through the gears and it jumped into gear in reverse and drive and I got a bit excited and gave it a bit of throttle and it drove forward. After filling it up I drove it around the block a few times and it didn't slip once just a bit rough but slowly getting better.

Will drain the fluid and flush from it in the morning.

Just a quick update. Had the transmission professionally flushed this morning and topped up with fresh fluid and drove like a dream.
    Just like it did before.
Won't do anything to hard just yet and will nurse it back to its routine of trailer towing in due time.

    Thanks everyone for your help
