    Tb42 carby starter

    Gday,

Starter motor is playing up on my shorty, Tb42 carby.

Contact cleaner hasn’t helped, but hitting solenoid with a spanner is working... planning on removing and inspecting / re-conditioning the wiring at end of he month before a big trip, but was thinking I’ll get a spare in case it doesn’t come good and then I can just swap.

I see a big difference in price between OEM and aftermarket starters for GQs.

Can anyone recommend if there is a good aftermarket replacement?

Also noticed there is 1 with an open ended gear and another with a cover, assume I need the open ended gear variant (240$)

Some screenshots of what I’ve seen are below:

Sounds like yours is full or corrosion - or moisture/mud.

I rebuilt my one, came up good then the solenoid started playing up bout a year later. Price for new solenoid was up there from memory so replaced it with a new genuine Hitachi one which i know i can reley on for a long time to come. Patrolapart did say the aftermarket ones they sell are still totally up to the job tho as there is a reasonable price difference. Personal choice but for me something as important as a starter and doing solo remote stuff more than happy to pay extra.
