Not sure if the crd is better but I find mine fine..
Car was 3.5T and camper 1.4T.
Sure I missed the down low on hill starts but once above 1200rpm it pulls fine..
I wasn't in a hurry though (who would be in this outback country) and sat on 90kmh most the time but hills etc didn't seem to bother it.
Adelaide hills I was in 4th but they are long and steep..
If your wanting more power east coat performance can do mail order remaps on Di's.
They have done a lot of work on different parameters to suit each mod.
Of course on dyno is best to get the best but for $700 and a week down time it's imo a brilliant investment..
Worth a think about anyway if your towing a lot..
it's gunna blow bigger than moby dick mate

SUCH IS LIFE
Holly crap.. 3.5t vehicle... I suppose it had the upgrade.
We towed 2.7t and the Patrol would do it all day every day and would not miss a bit. Just was slow at doing it and required lots and lots of gear changing...

Stamp on mine says 3tonne towing but the GQ 4.2 says only 2.5 towing , never could understand it .

Yea mate and you'd be surprised how much a regular patrol weights on a camping trip.
I have no doubt that most when packed for even a long weekend are over the factory 3050kg.
You also have to remember that when hitched up that 200kg of ball weight is classed as vehicle mass..

Mate love it.
I have no doubt the mods fitted to get it have added 50kg but with all the stuff going down atm with vehicle weights and van weights I'm glad I have it.
Imo the way it's going I can't stress enough that blokes get theirs done.
It's expensive but the fines they'll start with and more than the upgrade, and it seems Vic are leading the way..

Nope original auto , I have no idea if it has been upgraded or not but thought all these models could tow 3 - 3.5?

The only auto that had it's full 3.??T payload was the Tb48 petrol. But that auto was a different box and 5 speed.
So gu td42 manual was 3.5t
Auto was 2.5.
Zd30 manual 3.2t
Gq td42 I think was also 3.2.
But both autos were 2.5.
I've seen a few data sheets on it I'll hunt it down and post it.

Not data's I was looking for but yea.
"The GU petrol and 4.2-litre diesel models were rated at 3500kg towing capacity but the ZD30 was restricted to 3200kg with the manual ’box and 2500kg with the auto"
https://www.motoring.com.au/buying-a...88-2010-22866/
Maybe I've been reading it wrong and it's only the zd30 that's reduced??
But they all run the same auto box so not sure now lol...

Just went up and checked and was shocked you're right 2.5 max ,so now I have to work out where I seen the 3tonne figure , we bought the van and GU as a package both 2002 model for $34thou which was a bargain considering what we sold the van for after we went round oz .
Van was max load of 2750 and from memory unladen was 2450 , poor bugger I bought it off not only got ripped off by the dealer for services he's been sold either a car or van that wasn't right for weight and didn't check .
Just as well we never got pulled up we would have been in the shit .
I'll have to do some more searching because I'm sure I've seen a plate showing a higher figure .
No wonder it struggled on the really big hills .

Unfortunately I have never heard of a towing upgrade for the patrol like you seen now for the yotas and dual cab range..
And look I would say 90% of the auto owners out there towing big vans would have no idea of the 2.5t limit.
But it's all coming out now with So many vanners on the road these days and so many big vans behind small cars..
I wouldn't stop using it but just keep it in your mind and hunt a solution..
