    Vp44 alternative

    Just putting this out there
I'm just wondering if anyone has considered a mechanical IP instead of the VP44 on zd30di's .
I'm curious to see if it can be done .

What are you really referring to with the "mechanical" part? The control?

VP44 is a mechanical pump with the electronic control or EDC. As its design of radial pistons (VR/VP series) instead of axial (VE series) as previous it has much higher injection pressures ~700 bars vs ~400 bars which means doubling the power output per cylinder e.g. from 25kW to 50kW.

VE pumps have mechanical control/governors but they also come with EDC(essentially same control design as VP44) later but I'm not sure you could fit one instead of VP series.

Because of higher injection pressures you'd have to replace injectors as well.

That's right .getting away from the electronic governor .
Making it more "tunable" so to speak '
I know a bloke up here ,who is considering putting a 4BT Cummins IP on his Triton
to get more out of his engine .

    Thanks

Argh, the ultimate fallacy, indeed EDC control is the easiest and most effective tuning. There seem to be a missunderstanding, mechanically governed diesels will never achieve the output which can be achieved by the equivalent electroning control.

Part of the problem with electronic control is that there are artificial restrictions put in place to keep a tab on emissions, reliability and of course commercial factors....

For example you can for peanuts increase the power output of ZD30 at least by 30% just by remapping the electronic control, try that with mechanically governed TD42. No chance but it isn't fair to compare these motors as their construction is different. One is indirect injection 2 valves per cylinder pushrod engine while another twin cam OHC direct injection beast. Just imagine for a moment what would "ZD45" engine be like ( that would be extra 2 cylinder added to original 4 pot) and no emissions limits like there were with TD42. I'm sure we could talk 200 kW + with 800 Nm + torque.....

Electronic control adds massive improvements to engine efficency, but also offers restrictions added which is/was the primary driver.

    Therefore 6 cyl TD42Ti 114kW vs 4 cyl ZD30 with 118kW of power output.

Sticking Cummins 4BT in to Triton is lunacy, remap the ECU if you are after more power, its cheaper and less illegal.

    Hi Rumcajs
Thanks for your reply ,in relation to remapping who does this and what is the cost ?

    Thanks

    https://ecpt.com.au/products-services/ecu-remapping/

    or on Facewaste

    eastcoastperformancetuning

    they're in NSW.

I'm not sure what the cost is but my guess around a grand. What is required on ZD30 (DI) is that they de-solder the memory chips (only writeable once) resolder memory chips sockets then insert writeable chips (eeproms) with modified maps. All limps are "taken care of" and massive improvements to low to mid range torque.

Give them a call to find out. I'm planning to do that next week. Blokes I know swear by that. Also NATS can be taken care of if you don't mind exchange ECU (that's what I'm after as I have a spare ECU but from previous model).

What is all that doing to the engine is anyone's guess but there is no more of that dreadful hesitation/lag on take off and no more limps.

    Cheers

    Absolutely agree with Rumcajs.
The zd30 internally is said to be a strong engine.. Stronger than the td42...
Its major down fall is the stress it's bolt ons are under and a few of the advanced Nads can also be a cause(Ie maf voltage modifier) but that's for another post..
East coast performance are (atm) the only company doing a remap for the Di.
They do a mail order aswell.
They have done a lot of research into the tuning of the engine so I'd be more than happy going this route.
But for the best tune it's always better to do on the fly or on dyno..
150kw is not unheard of from a stock engine after remap (apart from exhaust and a few intake mods of course..)
    But is the upper limit..
130kw is a much more realistic figure, and around 350-400nm depending on transmission and tyres I guess..
Any more you start talking turbos etc.
So yea contact ecpt and have a chat to them.
Pretty sure its $700 + postage for a mail order remap.
You tell them supporting mods, and what your after and theyll map to suit..
About a week turn around from you posting to you reciving..

Make the car nicer to drive n gets away from limp mode ,all I have to do is increase the boost to 20psi n
away we go ,I have to send them my computer n about a week turn around , sounds very interesting.
Thanks for your input guys .
