Poison bait is a very bad idea. There will be unintended victims and then the rats in immense pain end up die in places that are impossible to reach and end up with the deadly smell for months.
Avoid poison and use traps.
There always are four legged solutions like having a female cat. The best solution IMO.

I use throw baits in the roof any time I can hear them chewing up there , check a few days later & ALL baits are always gone . ALLEGEDLY they eat the baits & gets insanely thirsty so go out looking for a drink & they die outside . So I'm told . Never found 1 dead 1 in the roof ever .

Any animal that eats those dead rats will die as well. That includes native eagles, other birds of prey, etc etc. And not to mention the pet dogs & cats end up munching on those dead or dying rats also end up dead. Pretty bad idea to use poison.

Use the throw baits and wax blocks in the shed and roof , have done for years , yes it makes the rats/ mice thirsty they go looking for water outside and die .
Have three semi useless and one excellent mouse ,snake , rabbit catching cat and so far it's only been the big brown snake that has affected it , when the mice are about it's nothing to see it eat about four a day .

Whatever you do, don't get a cat. They will kill far more native birds and animals than thet will mice and rats.
Cats should be banned from Australia.

Personally agree, although we do have here two collected for some bighearted lost home/shelter saving reasons :-( Be prepared folks to build your own kitty kat Fort Knox's to responsibly keep them within! Honestly too much bloody effort I says :-)

Apologies if I offend here folks.
Three types of good Australian cats I personally believe:
#1 "No cat/cats"
#2 "A dead feral cat"
#3 "A fully contained house cat with countless hours of Dad's sweat making ramps/races/sunshine indoor solariums" :-)
Please excuse me now for 15 minutes, the Kelpie & Old Blue have gone off their tits at hearing a new fresh Foxes Den ;-)

In SA we are allowed to use cat traps in our backyards and can borrow them free from the council.
I don't need to borrow one as I have my own.
