Thanks Plassy, I am going to call my Nissan dealer this morning to find out what their company recall was all about and what the company engineering decision was. I also need to have a closer look at the hole configuration in the rim to see if it it machined to suit a stepped nut such as this. Is the pic of the stepped nut off a GU alloy or the tri star GQ alloy?

Rims are 100% configured for the Steely tapered nut, not flat face, just checked now.

Just spoke with Nissan and first the spares manager said the rims needed to be run with flat faced nuts, however when I pointed out they are machined for taper nuts and there are witness marks where the taper nuts have been used, he then said, well, use taper nuts!!. He said there has never been a recall or service note on patrol rims or nuts, but there was a recall notice on Navara rims. he did say the patrols have an embedded harmonic issue and nuts have only ever come loose on the back LH wheel, so recommended the plastic telltale devices, and go with taper nuts.

Fair enough mate, especially if the rims are machined for tapered nuts. The stepped nut I posted earlier was from my GU which had alloys without tapered holes.

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.

His validation was as a Spares part manager, 35 yrs with Nissan, why would I suspect the info is incorrect. thanks for digging this up Darren. He did suggest the tell tales, which I will get in due course.

Can you recall if they were the flat style or the units with a tube body so they sit out a bit further from the rim? 19mm nut.

Scary that he has been there 35 years and was adamant that the service campaign / recall didnt happen. Disappointing. wonder what his position would be on the bubbling Dash fiasco....

Do you mean the telltales? They are a little plastic over cap that goes over the top of each nut. The telltale is the Nissan Logo embossed into the end. clip them over the nut and line the logos up so they are not big yellow jiggers. I didnt bother. I put grease on my studs an a torque wrench to 120nm and have never had a single nut loosen in 20 years.

OK, we use these on site but apparently they dont tighten the wheel nuts as you drive along as we still have mining utes losing wheels!!! Might be a toyota thing??
