    FS5R50b FS5R30a transfer compatibility

    Hi knowledgeable Patrol people!
I’m looking to upgrade my FS5R30a trans on my 1998 RD28 to a FS5R50b, can someone confirm if the new trans will work fine with my existing transfer?
And is this code the upgraded later type 50b; 32010VD200?

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.

I was told early on that the transfer cases are the same (Can't confirm that. As MR suggested, Patrolapart should be able to help), but you will need an adapter plate or different bell housing between the RD28 and the heavier transmission. I was also informed by @nissannewby that the heavier transmission will sap a lot of power from a stock RB or RD engine

Hi all, thanks, my findings seem to be theat the transfers and fitment are the same, but no concrete source to confirm it.

@mudnut thats an interesting point you make, this vehicle only does mild off road at best, mostly road touring, so the decreased weight and fuel saving of the 30a box may be better than the strength benefit of the 50b?

Is the 30a safe with 400lbft/540Nm on 32" tyres?

So you've had the engine modified? I've read that they only give 170 to 180 ftlb stock. It should go quite well with the 50a at 400ftlb.

I would like to know if the 30a is comfortable with 400lb and 32”s as I would really appreciate the fuel saving if it can, bearing in mind the OM606 doesn’t make its torque like the V8 diesels, torque is comes in a lot later like a petrol.

I know that a mob in Bayswater do upgrades to the 30a. I rang them and apparently they try to strengthen areas where the boxes constantly wear out. I would definitely go with the 50B. The box itself has a stronger raised grid pattern cast into it for extra strength.

There was a fault with a run of the 50, where Nissan didn't machine deep enough splines for 4th or 5th (can't remember which gear) and they failed. Hopefully a knowledgeable member of the forum can tell you which series had that problem, And how it was fixed.

Do recall watching a Legend from the UK on Youtubey only a few weeks ago that had your wicked Merc diesel too in his Y61 wagon over there
Cannot find the video again but seem to remember he mentioned exact engine power numbers versus the big box as his choice, worth trying to find that video I believe DG370 Mate
