    Winch maintenance request

    Just putting this out there.

    My winch which hasn’t been run more than 3 or 4 times since I’ve had the vehicle & never in a recovery situation. Whilst it’s always worked the control lever is very stiff to operate, but access to remove the winch is not great, so much so that it’s basically a job I just don’t want to do myself.

    It’s a Warn XD9000 winch fitted to what I believe to be a stock Nissan bullbar, with wire cable having been replaced with Dyneema rope. I need to get the stiff lever issue fixed before we finally take up the ‘gypsy lifestyle’ (so no great rush - any time this year) & wonder if there is anyone here who might be willing to do the job for me & have a break away from home at the same time.

    I’ve got a decent workshop environment & can feed you & accomodate you. (Plenty of room for a camper or van, or there’s a spare room in the house). In addition I’d be happy to put fair payment into your wallet, along with learning a bit about winch mechanics during the process. Location is just outside of Ballarat. Prefer someone I know.

    Alternatively could anyone hazard a reasonable guess as to what it might cost me just to take it to a local 4wd workshop?

    Never heard of Reidies ? But yes I have no doubt that a local company could do the job for me, however my preference would be for me to provide assistance to someone who knows what they’re doing so I can learn a bit. If I knew local 4wd mobs & was confident that I wouldn’t get ripped off I’d be happier to go that way. If anyone has first hand experience with any workshops who would do this in the Ballarat area whom you could recommend I’m all ears.

    Readies are in Huntly (epsom) just north of Bendigo. If your coming to Bendigo at all on one of my days off I would be more than happy to help you pull it down and regrease it. I've done mine several times. They are pretty easy if they are still working and it is just a service. You can either pick up a pair of gaskets (less than $10) or just use a small amount of liquid gasket goo stuff. Other than that it is pull apart clean regrease and assemble. Check motor and drainage etc.

    Thank you, I may take you up on that once my back is working properly again. I suspect that the bullbar would need to be removed to get access. Sure I couldn’t entice you down to Ballarat?

    Should be able to remove it while the bullbar is still on. I can for mine

    Yeah there will be a removable splash gaurd under the bullbat which you can take off and open up access.

    You should have a go @Cuppa. You will surprise yourself. Download a manual for your winch off google including an exploded diagram and get stuck into it.

    What bullbar is it? The factory ones have a removable splash guard as mudrunner stated. Other brands no doubt are similar. Just depends if it has a separate cradle that it is mounted to. Well if I find my self with a day off and heading over to Ballarat (visit grand parents) I'll get in touch but fairly busy for the immediate future here sorry mate.

    I’ll have a look when I’m able, but I’m pretty sure I was told previously that the bar had to come off.
