    GU Engine Upgrade

    G'day all,

After some advice for getting some more power from my patrol

Currently has got a 6.5 N/A, which is currently in good nick, doesn't get hot, no oil leaks, not bad on fuel etc.

Lacks a bit in the power department on the highway.

    Current options are

Turbo kit from BD - 7k with a Garrett turbo and cross country intercooler.
Gturbo using BD manifolds and a CC intercooler - maybe a few hundred more
Can get a written off 06 4.2 ute with all the mods (CCcooler, bigger turbo and 12mm pump airbox/snorkel) for 10k, and prob get a few grand for my engine, do the job myself
6bt conversion - unsure of how much a conversion is actually worth as I would need to get it done by someone as I wouldnt have the time.

Any advise would be appreciated especially of someone has been in this situation before.

    cheers

I don't really know anything about the 6.5l (detroit I assume?) but a turbo upgrade will always be easier and cheaper than a full conversion. I just have no idea how those engines go with the extra boost. If BD reckon it's a goer though then that would be by far the most manageable..imo.

The td42 is a good engine but if you're just looking for a bit extra power then a turbo and intercooler would see you through. I reckon if you'd prefer a td42 just sell the thing complete and buy a td42. Few kicking around now with all the work done.

As for the 6bt.. i think if you've got deep pockets and lots of time then do it.. but post the progress up here!

    Thanks 0-TJ-0

I forgot to mention that its a dual cab which took me long enough to find a good one.

Upgrading the current engine will be my plan.

Ah yep. That makes more sense.

Well I just put a 12mm pump and upgraded turbo on my td42 which they rated for about 250hp. Haven't had it dynod yet but enough power there now to put a smile on your face. @MudRunnerTD put a really good build thread up on his too.

I would assume you'd be easily getting the same or better power figures with a quality IC turbo addition.

I have the 6.5 Optimiser in my GQ, waiting to bolt on the supercharger which is sitting on the floor glaring at me.. Assuming this is for a GU? Turbos not recommended for the GQ - under bonnet volume too small and they suffer from heat sink. 6BT, well have seen a couple and unsure what state you are in, but in Vic, these engines in a GU are only allowed, if engineered, without a front bullbar or dual battery/winch due to the weight being right on the limit of the front axle capacity. I know the 24Valve units go very well, but something to consider. Maybe the 4.2 is a better option as you can't really get much out of the 6.5N/A beyond what you probably have.

Sorry, just re-read the title, so GU comments only relevent.

I averaged 17lph in tassie on our 2 week
Get away which isnt too bad concidering I have 417rwhp . Can be thirsty if driven hard though.

I was huge on disels but just didn't give
    Me that buzz driving them.

Turboing your 6.5 would be best cheapest option but if you're after power i really wouldnt be going a td42.
They were never made to handle over the 180rwkw mark and even the ones running that power i personally think you're pushing it (some may beg to differ)
