yeh not this time around, doing a google search it seems 2 be a common problem but all the things suggested don't work so assume its because its running windows instead of the mac os

I'll assume that the windows will not have the macbook drivers etc loaded by default. Hence why it's not working. Need mobo drivers to begin with.

Do you know if a dead battery would cause this @Hodge? I would of assumed it would still work as normal with the charger plugged in

From past experience some laptops boot up when battery is removed due to battery or battery connections on the laptop are faulty.
Removing the battery and directly running laptop from mains, sometimes helps.
Can a macbook battery be removed ?

did you upgrade to windows 10? hmmm cant really help you tbh, it was a one of a kind install and i couldnt really troubleshoot over the net lol. best suggestion i can make is to reinstall OS from a USB, u know how to do that?
