@Sir Roofy, nah all good mate, the TD42 is a Solid Engine, solid platform. Silver Top or Black top they are tough as guts.......... They are tuned to 65rwkw out of the factory. The TD42Ti is about 70rwkw and 9psi of boost. With just a Dyno run i have mine tuned to about 92rwkw and 15psi and its done 200,000kms there. good for another 500,000kms there too.
If you look around Facebook you will fine all this chatter about "Kettles" and snapping Cranks. Now we are talking about guys pushing 150rwkw and above or badly tuned, there is a big group of young guys chasing big numbers beyond 200rwkw that are snapping cranks. AB had 200rwkw and a bloody strong engine. if the cause was hydraulic lock from trapped oil then it would have happened at 100rwkw too.
Unfortunately the ZD has a reputation of going bang regardless of its treatment. Don't worry Toyota has exactly the same bloody problem but no-one is talking about it like the ZD.
For a Farm Tractor engine the TD42 is a Beast mate.
Its a Nissan! =====> Its a Keeper!! ....... Got a TD42 in it BONUS!! ....... I'm a lucky bugger! I've got 2 of em!

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever. WARNING: Towballs used for recoveries can, and do kill people and damage property.

I have heard though that you shouldn't push a black top NA engine over 15 psi.
This was a between era of a dedicated NA engine and the Pistons and conrods whilst are still strong are somewhat lightened for a dedicated roll out non turbo.

The pistons were lighter that was about it. Cranks seem to be the same and apart from little end differences rods arent any weaker. I put one together that ran 23psi and just over 200rwhp. it has done about 30,000km without issue.
