Replace 3L CRD?

I've been wondering what I'd do if my 3L CRD dies prematurely or just wears out, I've almost decided that I'd either A - Get a new motor or B - get it rebuilt.

But I'm wondering what others think?

I have no idea on what it would cost for either option, but I am sure both would be cheaper than a new vehicle.

My question is, who do you go to get a new / reconditioned motor? Who do you go to to rebuild a motor?

I've been told that once the 3L gets to around 200,000 the motor starts to go downhill, I'll be at 200,000 in around 2 years.

I really don't want to get rid of the Patrol, coz it's a bloody good truck.

I'm interested to hear other peoples opinions on this. Am I mad?

I've been wondering the same thing for a while now, and I think I've decided to do the LS swap. It all depends how much money you have to spend and what power / fuel consumption and reliability you're after.

If you're on a tight budget, the best bet would probably be going to a wrecking yard and looking for a decent ZD30 with good compression etc (if you're able to do the swap yourself or with mates).

Personally I think those who look at putting 4.2's in post 2007 Patrol's are crazy.

Can be a bit of luck with ZDs, my folks have one still going good as the day it was new with over 350 thou on it a lot of it towing all over oz, sure it's days are numbered but still going strong. May as we'll drive it till it blows. Exchange motors from the guy we got roofys motor from are a good option i reckon, his had been good and price is reasonable. He does a lot of ZDs. .

Well, I sure hope I'm one of the lucky ones, I do spoil the crap out of the truck. If I could get 350K out of mine, I reckon I'd be ready for something new.

I'd do a ZD for ZD swap, I'm no mechanic, a tinkerer at best.

Most CRDs are aimed at around 200k. After that it's downhill. So I've heard from multiple people.

Zd30 crd aren't that expensive from wreckers.
If one died on me. I'd be sticking in a new low km crd from a cost wise perspective. Like for like.

Don't quote me on this ...
But I believe the ECU should come with the motor out of the same vehicle because , the injectors will be already matched / coded to it.
Someone correct me if wrong.
Otherwise everything else is direct bolt back in.

If its like for like, you can use the ECU that you have. If you were going from a Di to a CRD then it would be different. Also maybe there might have been ECU parameter updates throughout the series, not sure if there is or not. But if you got an engine from a vehicle of the same age or thee abouts I would think it would be fine.

FWIW... my CRD had way north of 200 on it when I sold it and was still pulling like a teen after his first night at the skimpies.

If the leak down is in spec, rail pressure is OK and the injectors are good then the performance will be as well.

Drive it like you stole it till it's clagged and worry about it then IMHO... and... when it is clagged I would do a swap not a rebuild
