OK you two, been reading your gushing on the outback, and having previously had a bit of a horn for a forester, so I'm looking again (gotta rid myself of this shite xtrail cvt piece of crap I'm putting up with currently). Not new though, will be used for me. Some quick research tells me the forester went from timing belts (125000km life) to timing chains (whole of vehicle life) in 2011. So I'm looking 2011 onwards. Anyway I have no subaru experience so any heads up would be appreciated. Pros and especially cons.

My wife wanted me to buy one, so it was easiest to do that than resist.

Last Subaru I had was in 1976, could not kill it as a young hoon driver. They are from a heavy engineering background so I wasn't pushing back too much! They do come very well appointed with a pile of standard gear, much like a Honda for example. I have a couple of friends with them and have not heard a bad word, services even handed pricing, mine has 5 yr fixed price, but suspect a lot of makes do this as well. I don't really know much more than that. No idea on what to look for in a s/h unit apart from the normal. I doubt you would find many that have been flogged off road, more banged up from suburban damage.

The later units have this CVT transmission in them. Its an odd sort of feel, unsure of the mechanics of it, but totally step-less and responsive in the auto gearbox.

Thanks phil. I have a gut feel they are a niche maker, hence I'm slightly nervous. But that could also be a great thing. The standard manufacturers are really putting out very uninspiring and unimpressive offerings these days. I drive a lot of hire cars and therefore a lot of different makes and models. Cant remember last time i really enjoyed a ride. Cvt is really a bugbear of mine. I hate it. No feel, just like driving a rubber band powered car. My xtrail is a good car overall but i hate its guts mainly because of the cvt. The worst transmission ive ever had. Anyway, im rambling. A few reds down, but I'm looking forward to learning more about subarus and maybe even buying one!

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.
