    Adman's Red Baron - Y61 RD28 Slug

    So it begins...

Howdy all, new to the forum! Used to own a Hilux, rolled it on it's roof, now I own a patrol! More on that previous lifestyle here...

Decided to buy something cheaper due to financial pressures, settled on a the RD28 patrol as a few of my mates have them, and as a result I've had to help fix them already on numerous occasions!

Picked this bad boy up for a good price with good history... unfortunately on the drive home from South Australia to Melbourne the achiles heel of the RD28 kicked in and the harmonic balancer dropped off the crankshaft. It's currently at the mechanic's undergoing diagnosis... fingers crossed the engine doesn't have to come out.

Here she is though - comes with a few mods already, and some grand plans for the future, though I would've rather put the 6k in engine rebuilds into mods 😞

    Current Mods

    • Raslarr Sheet Metal Bullbar - not really liking this one, looks really long. It's up for swaps for a similar triple hoop design if anyone wants
    • Snorkel
    • Side Steps
    • BF Goodrich 33x12.5/R15
    • Chipped with something...
    • Titan Drawers
    • Oil Catch Can
    • Cheapo UHF with 1.2dB aerial
    • Shitty single din head unit

    The Modcast

    • Install old parts from Hilux
    • Switches galore
    • Uniden Uh5060 UHF with GME AE 470 2.1dB Antenna
    • Unbranded 14500lbs winch, eBay synethic cable
    • Dual battery system
    • CTEK D250S Dual battery management system
    • Swap bullbar for better look
    • 2" lift
    • 35"s on 16" rims
    • Underbody bash guard
    • Recovery Points
    • Diff guards
    • Bullbar spotties
    • Roof Rack
    • Roof rack spotties
    • Roof rack sidelights
    • Switch panel
    • Gauges
    • On-board air compressor
    • Rear drop bar door shelf
    • 2nd glovebox
    • Awning
    • FM radio antenna
    • Always more...

    Engine's coming out...

Diagnosis is in - Crankshaft is cooked! Got the car towed to my mate's shed where it'll rest up for the next month or two while things get sorted.

Looks like the keyway's been munched hard into the crankshaft. Engine will come out. Weld and machine the crankshaft.

I'll probably do some preventative maintanance mods while it's out and accessible - dowel the keyway & redirect the coolant outlook to the back of the head to prevent cracking. Plus get all the gauge senders lined up so it's plug-n-play when it goes back in.

Other mods kicked off on the side, grabbed a roofrack off gumtree and began installing the sun. Twin totally legit ARB lightbars, 6 side lights, 2 reverse/rear lights. Had to get creative mounting the lightbars under the roof rack - drilled through the casing and stuck a nylock nut down the cooling fins, then spaced them away from the rack with some bunnings aluminium RHS with rubber strips to dampen vibration.

Common issue the RD28's. This best to be checked atleast once a year in my opinion.

That's Jonno. How do you know him?
