As MN suggested first measure where you want the earth strap say Auto casing to
chassis/body or even back to the neg terminal on the battery if its not too long

Having spoken with a few mechanics & auto transmissions places about my issue, it sounds like I'm better off taking my patrol to an auto electrician.
