Works much better retracting when removed now.
Pop a how-to thread up Crem. There would be plenty of people here with this problem.

What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal??

Sure. I didn't take any photos when I did it, but after the success (and relative simplicity) I intend to do the same to the passenger side, so I'll document that when I get to it.

    Watching with interest here.
My drivers side is really bed. There is major dents between the door and body where I've shut the door and the metal buckle got jammed in there after NOT retracting.

First step when playing with the retractor - BUY LOTS OF BANDAIDS !!!! My fingers still have the scars from when I tried to do that.

Seatsafe sell a great replacement. I bought mine in 2012 and they are still working great.

Ok, thanks for the prompting, I just did the passenger side belt. Only took about 10mins to complete.
Everyone can manage getting access to the tensioner, so I'll skip to the good bit.
This is in my GU III 2004.
You can see plastic covers on both sides with 'do not remove' on them. Pay attention to that. Leave them on there.

And here is a detail of the mechanism with tilt lock (the copper part). You'll need to hold the tensioner vertically to release the belt.

Pull out all the belt length until you see the plastic spool.

You'll need to hook the belt end and pull it from the plastic spool. Loosen off a bit of tension from the back so it's not held in with any pressure.
    I used a scribe with a 90° hooked end.
Pull it out and push the little pin out of the loop.

Before you remove the strap, take note of which way it feeds though. The slits are slightly different thicknesses, but you can see a small hole at the loop end and a big hole at the back where the belt feeds into the plastic spool.

Pull the belt out and keep a tight grip on the spool from the front and back by pinching your fingers into the slots. It's not hard to keep hold of. Just like a fully extended tape measure.

Use two hands to wind the spool against the tension. Just turning it with your thumbs while also keeping fingers on it from the back too. For my driver's side I think I wound about 6 - 8 full rotations, for the passenger side I only did 4.

Line up the spool and feed the belt loop back through the side of the spool you took notice of earlier

Push it through and reinstall the pin.

Pull the belt loop back into place and let it retract slowly.

Now you can bolt the tensioner back into place with the guide screw and test how it functions. If it's still not great, repeat the process and wind a few more rotations into the spring.
I did this whole process with the belt in place obviously.

Thanks Crem that's a good write up. I'll have to study your process a couple more times until it sinks in, but I'd like to do this. Haven't had good retraction since I bought it 12 years ago!!

IMO this how-to should also be in its own separate thread as its a bit hidden here. A very common Patrol problem that people would likely be searching for a solution. Can a mod copy this into a dedicated thread? @AB

    Thanks Cremulator great info mate!

Yeh I was really worried about trying this the first time as I didn't want to mess up the retractor, but it's actually really easy once you pull the tensioner out. As long as you don't let go of the spool when the belt is removed and let it unwind, you'll be fine.
@threedogs Patrolapart sell belts for the GU series 4 - $234.00 (on sale from $300.21). You might have to check with them on your specific interior colour code.
