    Conversion options

    Gday all!
Il try to keep this short, just after a bit of advise. I had my DI zd rebuilt a few years ago. It's done about 55000ks since then. I'm thinking iv done a piston ring, it's starting to chew a fair bit of oil. Had the diesel mechanic in Alice Springs check it out and he said without pulling the motor out couldn't tell. I really don't want to spend any more money on the ZD, iv got a Dawes and needle valve, egr block, catch can etc. I'm back down in Melbourne for a few months and am looking at a convertion. I'd just like to hear options and prices from people that have had experience or are in the know. I got a price for a 4.2 convertion from a well known place in Melbourne, $18500 for a motor with 200000 on it. That's roughly $5000 above my budget. Really don't want to sell the car and buy another as it's all set up the way I want it. Not interested in a petrol convertion and would love to stick with the manual.
Any advise or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Plenty more to come!

For anyone to do a decent job it will not be less than 15k. There is a lot more to it than people think. You could do it for under 15 but you need to do pretty much all the worl yourself even then you would be pushing to get it below 10k.

A lot of wreckers will sell a TD42 from a wreck in kit form. As in, everything thats needed for the conversion. Getting some one to do the conversion and right is something else. Depending on where you are in Melbourne, there would be a few shop that can do it. But I do think its hard to put a price on the conversion as it would vary between vehicle and whether theres anything extra that is needed to be done which could add to the costs.
I had my conversion done at JPC in Thomastown. The job was done and whilst I came across some issue form there behalf. They were all correct by them at no cost to me. Brett at 4x4 Obsession in Melton would be an excellent shop to go see to aswell.

I'm from Yarrambat way so Thomastown is not far at all. Mines a 2002 model, does that mean I'd have to get a motor newer then 2002? What wreckers would you recommend looking into?
The one I was quoted $18000 was a td42ti and included a new 3inch exhaust, it all sounded great but it's just hat little bit for out of my price range.

Readies at Bendigo have a good reputation for TD conversions. If cash is a real problem they sometimes have low kilometer ZDs on hand.
My advice is: not to follow my advice.
