Do I want to give in and let Microsoft install Windows 10 or is it not a good idea?
My advice is: not to follow my advice.

100% up to you mate, IMO looking at your position you will probably benefit from upgrading to windows 10, its just not for all and everyone.

As I say to any of my business clients, if you use the machine as a tool and it going down will impact your business, then leave it alone. If it is running Windows 7 or 8.1 and working fine, leave it alone.
Don't fix it if it aint broken.
If you are using it for home/personal use then do some homework on what apps/programs you will lose in the upgrade (Win 7 Media Center for example). Keep in mind, once you do, you lose a lot of control over updates (forced, heavy on internet usage) and get a metric ton of shitty apps that M$ shove down your throat.
There is no legal cure for STUPID!

You haven't by any chance " scheduled" emails being sent ??
Also what are you using Gmail? Hotmail? ISPs own pop service ?
When I had an email service through big pond I had mysterious email sent from me to me occasionally . Never bothered me so never found out why as talking to big pond help desk is like pulling teeth.

All emails have the same or similar subject, weight loss pills and workout suppliments. Lol.
I'm using Thunderbird as my client...
I have just been googling it and it seems theres no real way to stop this apparently. So I have just set up a filter for now to dump them into the junk folder. Some sites did say it will eventually stop. I hope. My business email has been pretty clean with no spam up until a few weeks ago and its quite bad now.

Could have something to do with your email / eBay being hijacked last week ? Maybe.

Sounds like you need to update your password and check the outgoing server hasnt been changed/accessed also. Who is your email provider? My sister had her yahoo account compromised and they changed the outgoing mail server and started sending emails from her account to all people in here contacts asking for money. No amount of password resets would block the culprits out as they had a backdoor through that mail server. You might find if you're receiving emails from yourself you probably have yourself listed in your mail contacts.
So yeah, i would be updating your password. If you can provide more info, like who your mail provider is or even send me a copy of the email so i can have a look at it ill let you know what i think.

oh and it wont be (highly unlikely) anything to do with thunderbird, its more likely that the webversion of your yahoo/gmail/live settings have been changed etc...
