    Question about radiator

    Just a question.
If anybody knows why this is happening. Radiator coolant is going into the over flow but it's not going back into radiator.
Had cap changed 3 months ago. It's not running hot at all.

    Thanks

    Hi Joanne
What type of Patrol do you have?
If it’s a GU 2.8 diesel then It sounds like a head gasket as that’s what happened to my kids car.
Has was escaping into the cooling system and pushing coolant into the over flow bottle.
Hopefully this isn’t the case if yours.

Park the vehicle with the nose up hill and perform this test.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...l=1#post537609 I'm not sure if the test time needs to be reduced if the engine is a diesel.

Post #13 of this thread explains how to burp the system.

Happened to my Patrol not so long ago. Turned out to be the smallest coolant leak on earth which was causing it. So when the coolant was cooling down, air was being sucked in instead of the coolant that was pushed out.

My mechanic said they "burp" themselves well the 3 ltr Di do.
I brought a $300 radiator when the head went on mine again
my mechanic had it pulled apart and the top and bottom tanks re fitted.
    Question ,,,are you losing coolant?????

Along the lines of what Mudski has posted.

First thing to do - because it is cheap & easy - replace the hose from radiator to overflow bottle. If there is the slightest air leak it will prevent the coolant getting sucked back into the radiator as it cools. Fingers crossed it's that & not a head gasket .

If changing the hose doesn't improve things test for blown head gasket either as already suggested or take to a mechanic who has a kit to check coolant for combustion gases. (A liquid which changes colour if combustion gasses are present - so shouldn't cost an arm & a leg). Don't do what I did with a previous vehicle & carry on driving around & just topping up the radiator. Result on my motor was the top of the engine block being eroded where the gasket had blown between the cylinders. It was a replacement motor scenario.
