The cops told us last time that bats and shotty's are NOT acceptable...
The problem with the trail cams is the 15 sec delay on the sensor, and I'm not overly impressed with them.
Should be able to get a trail cams with shorter delays Kat 15 secs is pretty horrid. My trail cam has a 1/2 sec initial trigger speed with 5 sec (adjustable) delay between photos / video re-trigger.

We've always had house alarms, with me doing nights for so many years it made sense. With all the sh!t going on around my area the panic button and home mode is the best feature and we always the home mode..

A camera system with alarm inputs & camera motion detect can send email to your mobile with pics, if you see something in the pics you can call the cops, or better still a neighbour. You want overt & covert cameras, can also upload video to cloud so if the recorder is nicked you still have video. You can set up which areas to detect motion on each camera. The Swann systems can be difficult to get working right, Vacron are easy to set up & make changes ($1000).
Put up a siren cover with a blue strobe on the bottom, your neighbours will comment on how good your alarm system is because it never false alarms like everyone else's. ($50)
A dog is still the best deterrent, it doesn't even need to be big.($20000 over its life).

One of my mates [policeman] caught a young kid in Essendon doing the wrong thing.
In his pocket was a piece of paper with every house that has a dog and those that dont.
Also had a huge amount of Ford car keys, this was back in the 80s though..
