Hi all,
I see quite a few GU towing vans (and horse floats, and boats). Have a 2000 GU 4.2 turbo manual, the car is rated to tow 3500kg. Great. But I have noticed a sticker inside rear door that says a maximum down-weight on tow hitch is 200kg. What? A lot of vans around would be around 2500 to 3000kg. Rule of thumb suggest 10% ballweight. That's 250-300kg.
Are people ignoring this? Removing the sticker?
Anyone towing these sort of weights like to comment on their ball-weight? I'd really like to know.
Thanks
G’day Monty Mate,
Also used to own ‘Ex-gone’ the exact same GU.
I honestly thought our rear door sticker said 250kg ball weight max and 3,500kg but my memory is shit.
Not gospel but I was nuffy tought anywhere between 5% <> 15% of total trailer weight on your tow ball was within hauling balance safety guidance only?
I certainly prefer to tower brace the rear coils on any Patrols I own and inner coil air bag assist to achieve a safer 10% but only in my no doubt illegal opinion?
Please do check my maths, 200kg @ 3,500kg is 5.7% ??
Right on the bottom line of what I was unofficially tought and personally not a fan of that percentage at higher weights like 3,500kg experienced with 5% scary wind wobbles
