Noob member alert - ZD 30 to 4.2TDi conversion
Hi I’m James or Patrol Jim as my username. I’ve had a CRD GU VII and I’ve just bought a 2003
ST-L ZD30 that is a sight to behold...however The old girl needs a new spring in her step. I have a 2003 factory auto trans and a 06 Black top low km’s and I need a little help before I take the leap. My question is, does the trans need any adaptor plate or do I need a TD 4.2 Bell-housing between the Manual engine and auto trans. Also do I need to change the diff gears for engine breaking? If so what ratio. I’m sure this subject is covered in the forum somewhere, if somebody could share the link, that would be beaut. 👍 good to be part of the crew! Patrol Jim

The ZD30 bell housing will bolt directly to the TD42 block but you’ll need to do this modification for the TD starter motor.
You have to drill & tap the 3 holes and remove a bit from the original starter holes. You can use the TD backing plate as a template.

On the subject of diff gears, I run the original 3.9 in mine and find it good. Some like it to rev harder on the highway but I’m at 1850 rpm @ 100 km/h with TC manually locked. 2000 rpm @ 110.. Less engine noise and pulls easily from there when needed.

That sounds perfect to me. I've got a manual so gear ratios are probably a bit different but I'd love for mine to sit in those rev ranges. I reckon mines about 2300 at 110kms and it just feels higher than it needs to be, especially after the pump upgrades.
