Ok, so the lastest from the dealer is... they’re going to get the turbo completely rebuilt, Remove the head and completely clean that out and see if or what need doing and complete flush and clean of all air intake and intercooler flush!
Unbelievable really. Taking complete ownership of the situation and suplying a car for me in the meantime.
Can’t ask more than that from a used car dealer who has no warranty obligation to do anything at all.
Might go buy a lotto ticket!

The 747
That is a bloody good outcome and it's good to see them stepping up and taking responsibility for it.
Make sure you let them know how happy you are with their response.

I got a call today to let me know what they found from removing the head. 🧐
They found that a couple of precombustion chambers had tiny cracks in them. He suggested to send the head off to a head specialist to replace all of them and reconditioning the head at a cost of $1200.
The top of the pistons looked fine as did the cylinder wall and the rest of it.
He’ll send through some photos so I can see the state of everything before and after for my records.
Good result really.

So as it stands this whole episode will set me back $1200.... pretty good considering a couple of days ago I was looking at potentially up to $10000 for a new turbo and rebuild.

I guess they have nochoice but to come to the party really..... Seeing as they had supposedly done a service on it prior to sale. I'm sure they would have noticed the sand if they had done one....... Got to keep up their "good name"

Wow pretty good result kudos to them for taking such ownership. Mine had cracked precomps which is fairly common, so for a few bucks will have a fresh top end, turbo and probably best of all peace of mind the thing will be solid as a rock for years to come, nice 1☺

Exactly right mate... my head is still spinning at how they’ve handled it.
Bit of a roller coaster this last week has been that’s for sure!

It's a Nissan thing
There's a thread on here somewhere that discusses the subject a bit.... Some td42s had different sized filters and some were the same size. Can't remember what years were what though.... My 92 GQ has 2 of the same
