Poor GQ 4.2 manual shifting
Hi All
I'm having issues with shift quality in my GQ 4.2 5 speed. It's a real effort to get 1st or 2nd without grinding. Any tips that might help improve or eliminate it. Gearbox onl has 220k on it.
I suspect a clutch adjust may help, but I'm also concerend it's ready to be replaced.
cheers
Damo

the 5spd gearboxes in patrols can be quite notchy when cold as in it takes a bit to get it into gear but shouldn't be grinding gears like you say. Once they warm up gear shifts are smooth.

The 4.2's defiantly need a gl-4 oil in their manual transmissions!
I've been using penrite 75-85 full synthetic for years, makes it a pleasure to drive and my GQ has just gone over 400,000kms.
The gl-4 oil helps the synchros. Gl-5 oils make the transmission very difficult to shift between gears.
