Just a thought.
Had a thought in my head for a few days now, on a cheap and simple portable fire place / BBQ. I was thinking of getting a metal 20 litre drum like a Frytol oil drum or similar and cut a square opening in it about half way down, whilst using the square piece as a door with a hinge. Drill a couple of holes just below that to slide a couple of metal rods through and then rest a smallish holed wire mesh on top of them to hold the wood on and I thought the base of the drum would help contain the ash as it falls through the mesh / fire grate, then put an old plough disc on top of the drum. I have also thought of using an old 60 litre drum too. I haven`t thought much about a chimney, but it would probably get put on some where and the only other thing would be a flare up from the fire when the oil / fat dribbles down the hole of the plough disc. Any one else have ideas that they have thought of and never acted on?
PS; Thought a chimney (metal pipe) of yay high could be welded on the hole of the plough disc.

I want to do a square one like my current fire pit that I got made up at work, just the pit not the frame with tiles.... which would sit on some sorta stand, but also something that bolts together so it can be stored in the 4b ( that still doesn't work ) relatively flat and just bolt together when arrive at camp and unbolt when leaving.
Also incorporate 2 or 3 gas burners that can be easily added and removed so on Total fire ban days I can use the gas, and when its not use it as a fire pit / bbq

Looks good NissanGQ4.2 . When you mentioned gas burners, it gave me a thought of a gas ring being put in to the drum idea I had for those days of a fire ban days you mentioned.

Too much effort Avo, as I`m no good at welding and my tools are limited to cut the necessary holes. I was thinking of another idea that was different that would get people thinking `that`s different, why didn`t I think of that`.

I`m not offended in what Avo said @MB and took it as humour.
All part of the just a thought section of this forum, which is based on other peoples thoughts they have had.
