A mate did similar, collected sand samples from many deserts & then carefully poured each sample into a glass bottle creating multiple contrasting layers, each labelled. Quite a good conversation piece. Stored on a shelf out of the reach of children.

The nicest looking sand in Australia, Lake McKenzie on Fraser Island.

Tried to get a photo with just the lake and sand but these backpackers kept getting in the way.
